”On the Other Side of the Fence” - A project for Developing Outdoor Education at Emmaskolan in Angered, Sweden
Main goals for the district of Angered (part of the Community of Gothenburg , Sweden) is to improve the results at school, decrease the number of drop-outs from school and to improve health status. A team of schools and preschools have been selected to serve as Model of Education. Their task is to develop pedagogical methods that could help fulfilling these goals. Emmaskolan is one of the selected schools. Our focus is developing methods for outdoor teaching.
In this process we cooperate with the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers Institute of Technology, Gothenburg Natural History Museum and Local authorities for Parks and Nature and Environment.
At a beautiful place nearby the school “on the other side of the fence” we have constructed a pond and an outdoor classroom (a formation of logs). This was originally the childrens´idea and it has been realized as a result of the devotion of some teachers in cooperation with local partners. The pond is now vibrant with frogs (eggs and tadpoles). The children enjoy spending time there and show great interest in outdoor experiental studies.
To develop methods for outdoor teaching and improve teachers´ skills with outdoor leadership the staff needs education. We plan to send 16 persons (in groups of 4) to attend the different Outdoor Education Courses organized by Kinda Lärcentrum, www.kinda.se, in Portugal, Scotland and The Czech Republic. These courses differ from each other by content – Outdoor Leadership, Experiential Approach to Learning and Learning Different Subjects Outdoors. All together they will provide the in-service training that will match our needs. Meeting with professionals from around Europe will expand our knowledge and intercultural understanding.
The school has a plan for implementation of new knowledge and experiences after attending the course and sharing the reults with others . The plan includes reporting to different levels of the organization (team, school-unit, other schools in the Model of Education, networks of teachers in the district and in the city Gothenburg) as well as taking actions to revise the pedagogical annual plans of Emmaskolan. Staff meetings will be held on a regular basis to follow up this implementation, to share experiences and discuss the new steps taken to carry out the outdoor teaching methods.
The expected result of this project is improvement of skills with outdoor leadership and developing methods for outdoor teaching and, as a consequence more healthy and inspiring environment for learning - and more inspired teaching. The aim in a longer perspective is better results in school, decreasing the number of school drop-outs and improvement of health in the district.
