Background: To prevent dropout from vocational education and to generate interest and motivation among the students. Several of the students who choose vocational educations are students who have problems related to learning and/or motivation. This situation challenges us to teach them in a way they can relate to and give them a sense of achievement. We also acknowledge the need for improved knowledge of international issues in the multicultural society our students are living in. The vocational students will both at school and in their working life be a part of a society which includes many different cultures and languages. This variety is mirrored in the nurseries and schools as well as patients and in the health service institutions where our students will work in the future. Multicultural societies and work places demand higher levels of competence from our students, and an international work experience will give our students the opportunities to develop a competence to face these challenges which have become an integral part of our society. The activities and method used to reach our goals is a work experience exchange. We have chosen ADC College in London as our partner for this project because they have an extensive professional network in London and can guarantee our students work experience of a high quality during the 3 weeks they are doing their work experience. Our students will have their work placement in institutions relevant for their vocational education. The responsible partner for arranging work placements and communicating with the different institutions during our stay will be ADC College, while our school will prepare the students for the exchange and follow them up while they are working. The curriculum for the vocational educations states that students should aim to gain internationally subject specific knowledge. While doing this work exchange in London we will achieve this, and by this also fulfil a part of the curriculum.
The objectives we have chosen for our project are the following:
A multicultural work experience with other standards and regulations than our domestic ones. Improve our language skills and prepare our students for a multicultural labour market back home in Norway. To learn how their future occupation is practised in another country and to observe how cultural similarities and differences influence how the work is practised. The students gain experience from a global labour market. This can broaden their experience and facilitate the possibility for studying or applying for jobs in the EEC in the future. To challenge themselves and develop personal traits and occupational competence as well as developing good skills in their vocational practise. Facilitate the possibilities for the students with special needs to improve their motivation, get to know themselves better and improve their self-image.
One of the most important objectives is to create motivation and interest for the different subjects involved in this project. A vocational exchange project like this will indicate that the school is seriously concentrating on this education. The number of students applying for these vocational programs is declining, and there is a major gap between the demand for workers and the number of students graduating. The lack of health care workers in Norway is a major problem for the society, by generating interest and showing that this vocational education is given high priority will we hopefully motivate more students to choose and complete this line of education. The work exchange shows the students the possibilities they have when it comes to doing part of their occupational training abroad, which can motivate some of the students who are tired of studying. Vocational students may have more motivational problems than other students and have a higher probability of dropout. We sincerely believe that generating motivation and interest for the subjects are vital to avoid this trend.
The results we would like to achieve by doing this international projects are:
Our students should improve their use of subject-related English in their line of work. Improve their knowledge of the British health care system. Reflect upon the differences between the Norwegian and the British welfare system. Gain insight in how a large health care institution is developed and run in a major city like London. Improve their ability to get around in a major city. To relate to people from other cultures both professionally and socially. Gain interdisciplinary experience by doing practical work in the institutions, for example through the topics of food, hygiene, communication, social and cultural aspects.
The long term advantages for our students, our staff and school as an organisation are: The school gains competence in vocational international exchanges. In order to expand this project in the future, is it important to implement and master this single project.
