The project presented by Loulé Secondary School (ESL) aims to address the needs identified by internal evaluation and by the last external evaluation: improving student's motivation levels and academic results and reducing early school leaving, through the application of new teaching and learning methodologies; developing teacher's professional skills, especially those that encourage the use of new methodologies; increasing the number of students and teachers involved in international projects, innovation and scientific and cultural research; promoting a quality culture, broadening the horizons of students in order to increase competitiveness at European level and boost European citizenship.
In order to fulfill these needs, the following objectives were defined: (1) increasing the use of ICT as a facilitator in the teaching and learning process, in all subjects and not just those connected directly to computer science; (2) increasing the School's European dimension by participating in more European projects, and through the organization of international meetings and training courses; (3) developing English language communication skills for the teachers directly involved in European projects and teachers involved in international meetings and training courses.
To achieve the outlined goals, the project includes teacher and executive staff training, in three distinct areas: the use of new teaching and learning methods in the classroom, covering subjects of all departmental areas; development of English communication skills, directed to the School executive staff and to the Director of the School Association Training Centre (CFAE), which is located in the school, in order to help overcome barriers in communication, promoting the participation in European projects and allowing the organization of training events and international training for teachers in English language; development of English effective communication skills (advanced level) for certified trainers, in order to allow international course teaching in this language; the use of best practices in the transition from traditional to digital mode, in the classroom, for knowledge transfer, and in school management.
After the completion of such training, and aiming towards school internationalization, the school will apply for its accreditation as an international training institution, so that, in July 2017, it is possible to offer the first training course in English for European teachers. This course will be organized in collaboration with CFAE under Erasmus + projects, by trainers accredited by the Scientific and Pedagogical Council for Continuing Training (CCPFC).
New methodologies using ICT, learned by teachers participating in the above mentioned courses will be applied experimentally in the beginning of the next school year, in order to assess results, validate and adjust strategies. The same teachers, all trainers accredited by CCPFC, will then publish the results and regionally disseminate the attended courses. In the first phase we expect to reach at least 80 teachers that belong to the schools associated with CFAE.
In June 2017 the School will host an international congress on the use of ICT in education, organized in collaboration with CFAE and the National Association of Computer Science Teachers, aiming dissemination and sharing of best practices in the Educational use of ICT.
The first teacher's international training in the school will be held in July 2017, also in collaboration with CFAE. It will be taught in English by teachers accredited by CCPFC who attended the English communicating skill courses.
The project aims to address the need to motivate students, encouraging improved educational achievement, promoting teacher's professional development and raising the school European dimension. The activities planned will allow not only the development of skills through the participation in international courses, but also the application and validation of these methodologies before they are spread. Initially the dissemination will be made at a regional level, and then internationally.
