"No hate speech COMPASS” was a long-term Human Rights Education training course that gathered 36 participants - youth workers and youth leaders from across EU and Eastern Partnership countries (Finland, Estonia, Moldova, Romania, Georgia and Ukraine). It was composed of 4 stages:
Stage 1: March 15-21, 2015, Sauvo (Turku), Finland
Stage 2: April 24-30, 2015, Chisinau, Moldova
Stage 3: Local activities in the country of residence
Stage 4: Evaluation seminar June 24-30, 2015, Kobuleti, Georgia
It focused on developing competences in combating hate speech through human rights education, notably using “Compass. Manual for human rights education with young people” as well as “Bookmarks - Combating hate speech online through human rights education” issued by Council of Europe.
The first stage was a seven-days training course (Turku, Finland, March 15-21, 2015), focused on issues of human rights in general, international and European human rights protection frameworks and different forms of discrimination. In this stage we used “Compass” as a source of different methods and tools in HRE.
The second stage, a six-days training course (Chisinau, April 24-30, 2015) was focused on using tools and methods proposed by “Compass” and “Bookmarks” manuals. This stage was devoted to combating hate speech in particular: understanding hate speech, analysing different examples of hate speech, discussing its causes and possible consequences, finally responding to this problem by designing local activities.
In the third stage (April-June 2015), participants implemented Human Rights Education activities based on what they've learnt and experienced in their home countries.
In the fourth stage, a final six-day evaluation seminar (Georgia, June 24-30, 2015), participants shared their experiences concerning implementation of local activities, exchanged good practices, evaluated their work and the whole learning experience.
Non-formal education methods were used such as role plays, simulations, drama, appreciative inquiry, world cafe and group work as well as small and large group discussions, Living Library. We also used Internet a lot in order to tackled the problem of hate speech online.
