The project “Nice to work with you!“ has enabled the city administration of the City of Bonn to offer an intensive European internship abroad for trainees as well as employees which are responsible for staff training. Currently, about 70 – 80 % of all decisions of the European Union are implemented in the municipalities. Hence, Europe is part of the everyday life of the local governments by now. In order to contribute to the success of the European idea, it is necessary to raise the awareness of the city administration for Europe and to offer advanced education for its staff because of its close proximity to the citizens. Thereby, the capability of the city administration to handle European affairs has been improved. By conducting mobilities for employees, the exchange of ideas and procedures has been fostered as well as the intercultural competences and the knowledge of foreign languages has been enhanced. As a result, “Nice to work with you!” has added actively to an area of European education. At the moment, the City of Bonn is qualifying 170 people in 22 different jobs. Mobilities have taken place in essential departments of 20 European municipalities and enterprises in 16 countries. These reliable project partners from Estonia, Finland, France, Gibraltar, Iceland, Italy, Liechtenstein, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom as well as the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia have offered amongst others traineeships in the departments of education, human resources, international affairs, culture, social welfare, e-government and city development. The stays abroad allowed the opportunity to get to know and to apply new and different practices of professionalism. By doing this, the cooperative teamwork across linguistic and cultural borders has been studied. “Nice to work with you!” has caused that acquired competences and knowledge from the mobilities have been practiced both in the home municipality and the hosting city administration. Consequently, the employability of the interns and the attractiveness of the European professional training in the public sector have been increased. The mobilities across Europe have been realized in the cities of Bolzano, Cluj-Napoca, Gibraltar, Graz, Istanbul-Pendik, Lisbon, Maribor, Reims, Reykjavik, Salo, Saragossa, Skopje, Strasbourg, Tallinn, Totnes, Triesen, Turku, Utrecht, Wiener Neudorf and Yalova. Furthermore, the European interns have been prepared for the European internship within the city administration of Bonn in the form of continued education in the intercultural and linguistic sector. In 2013, the federal city of Bonn has been awarded for its engagement in the field of Europe from the federal state North Rhine-Westphalia.
