NEWS - Neue Englische Wege in der Schule

At the Agricultural College of St. Florian the topics sustainability and the European dimension play an important role. There are already wide experiences with European co-operations with partner schools and a new ERASMUS+ project was started last autum. The currently ongoing development process for a new curriculum has the aim to foster the above mentioned topics. Improved English lessons, the preperation for the future introduction of CLIL lessons as well as intercultural aspects were the motivation for the project "NEWS - Neue Englische Wege in der Schule". Its aim is to ensure high quality and competence-oriented English classes, that are motivating both for teachers and students. Experiencing new methodes of language learning, participating in reflective pre- and post-teaching experiences, defining quality improvement potentials should help to improve the English classes. In addition the language skills, necessary for the preperation of CLIL lessons, will be acquired. Two participants will attend the English courses: One English and English Fachseminar teacher who lived and worked abroad for some time, who has acquired several additional certificates (Cambridge, EPICT, ...) and who developed tasks for the standardised A-levels in Austria, will attend the Course for Foreign Teachers of English. One teacher will attend a General English Course. He will be involved in the preperation of CLIL lessons. In addition he carried out several EU projects in the past and is now the senior project manager in the ongoing ERASMUS+ project. He is an expert in regional development and teaches rural development classes at the HLBLA St. Florian. The activities in the project are divided in three partes, the preperation phase (language, regional, cultural preperation), the main activities (language courses Course for Foreign Teachers of English and General English Course) and the follow-up phase (presentation of project results in school, transfer of acquired language and cultural knowledge). The participants themselves have organised the project activities as agreed upon with the headmaster. The results (new teaching methods, cultural and regional aspects) will be presented to the entire teaching staff at the beginning of the next school year. To strengthen the European dimension and to facilitate the access to future potential co-operations with schools in English speaking countries. To sum up, the quality of the English lessons will be improved, the introduction of the new subject CLIL and new European partnerschips will be facilitated.
