New Technologies on Motor Vehicle System Diagnostics

The organization is The A' Technical School Limassol, Cyprus, a public secondary technical /vocational school situated in Limassol, the only regional school with expertise in the area of mechanical and motor vehicle engineering, comprising of approximately one hundred teachers and five hundred students every academic year. About 30% of the schools students follow the courses of Motor Vehicle Engineering and the related specializations offered, always with the constant guidance and careful supervision of our qualified teachers. The department has a theoretical section which prepares students wishing to continue their studies further (i.e college and university) and practical section which prepares students that will enter the work market upon leaving school. The host organization West Scotland College, Clydebank Campus, Scotland is a public college of further education in Scotland. It offers a large variety of courses covering almost all areas of technical and vocational fields including engineering, construction, administration, business, tourism, computing and IT, education and leisure, languages, hospitality and catering, hairdressing and beauty and therapy etc. In the engineering field the college has a large motor vehicle department offering seven different courses, commencing with the basic level and finishing with the BSc (Hons) level. Among these courses the college runs two diagnostic courses, an area in which the college has very modern equipment and has developed great experience. The students that will participate in the programme were selected as they are currently attending the motor vehicle course and studying the relevant subjects at school, and will be accompanied by teachers of relevant topics. The project is planned to have a duration of 2 weeks. The 2-weeks time period may seem short but it was decided upon after long and careful planning, on our part. The students specific needs are professional training in modern diagnostic equipment, since the cars which are currently being used are all equipped with management systems (computerised) using sensors and actuators. In order to be able to solve any malfunctions they must be familiar with the waveforms of each sensor and actuator using the appropriate diagnostic equipment, therefore their training regarding the appropriate equipment i.e. picoscope, is essential. The Clydebank Campus, in Scotland was chosen as it is equipped with the diagnostic equipment and the picoscpoe and its staff have years of experience in these sectors which will be most valuable to our students. Arrangements have also been made to ensure that the participants will be visiting the Jaguar manufacturers car plant where they will be given a tour of the vehicle assembly plant with discussions on assembly processes and a tour of the manufacturers specific training arrangements facilitated by their plant training centre. They will also be visiting the Jaguar manufacturers academy, where the team will learn about the different ways a manufacturer can solve any problem, of any official dealers, where ever they may be located worldwide, using modern methods like teleconferencing, skype, msn, facebook etc. The above visits are of vital importance to the students as they do not have such facilities in their home country, and for many of them this will prove to be the experience of a life time. The visiting students will be attending the college classes, both theoretical and workshop, together with the students attending Clydebank campus. By doing so they will become better acquainted and will experience at first hand the teaching and learning methods together with the opportunity to enhance the cultural experience. The programme will not only be of educational nature but will also offer the participants the opportunity to visit many of Scotlands museums, castles, historical sites as excursions and various activities have been planned. The main objective of the program is to gain further knowledge on the use of diagnostic equipment for best results and quality work in the market. this directly addressed by the program of the project. As an added advantage people from both countries will come in contact with foreign languages (english and greek) respectively as well as each others culture and way of life. These aims are directly reflected in the objectives of the project. On completion of the programme the team will return home and will act as multipliers of the knowledge and experience they have gained. They will be responsible for transferring their knowledge and experience gained to the rest of the school (department) students, the rest of the school (department) teaching staff and the ministry of educations curriculum development department, thereby assisting in the design of the new curriculum for the course.
