New Technologies on Motor Vehicle System Diagnostics and Hybrid technology

The organization is The A' Technical School Limassol, Cyprus, a public secondary technical /vocational school situated in Limassol, the only regional school with expertise in the area of mechanical and motor vehicle engineering, comprising of approximately one hundred teachers and five hundred students every academic year. About 30% of the schools students follow the courses of Motor Vehicle Engineering and the related specializations offered, always with the constant guidance and careful supervision of our qualified teachers. The department has a theoretical section which prepares students wishing to continue their studies further and practical section which prepares students that will enter the work market upon leaving school. The host organization West Scotland College is a public College of further education in Scotland. It offers a large variety of courses covering almost all areas of technical and vocational fields including engineering, construction, administration, business, tourism, computing and IT, etc. In the engineering field the college has a large motor vehicle department offering seven different courses, commencing with the basic level and finishing with the BSc (Hons) level. Among these courses the college runs two diagnostic courses, an area in which the college has very modern equipment and has developed great experience. The students that will participate in the programme were selected as they are currently attending the motor vehicle course and studying the relevant subjects at school, and will be accompanied by teachers of relevant topics. The project is planned to have a duration of approximately two and a half weeks. The time period may seem short but it was decided upon after long and careful planning, on our part. The students specific needs are professional training in modern diagnostic equipment, since the cars which are currently being used are all equipped with management systems using sensors and actuators. In order to be able to solve any malfunctions they must be familiar with the waveforms of each sensor and actuator using the appropriate diagnostic equipment, therefore their training regarding the appropriate equipment i.e. picoscope, is essential. The Clydebank Campus, in Scotland was chosen as it is equipped with the necessary diagnostic equipment and its staff have years of experience in these sectors which will be most valuable to our students. Due to technical problems on behalf of Jaguar manufacturers we were informed by themselves that unfortunately our trip to their site would have to be cancelled. Upon receipt of their email we immediately began arrangements to compensate this tour with another of same or similar nature. Luckily we were able to arrange a visit to Nissan car manufacturers which is also one of the biggest car manufacturers in the UK. The participants had the opportunity of participating in a tour around Nissans plant and the invaluable experience of seeing the production line which is equipped with modern and synchronized robots, presses and other equipment necessary for the production of the cars. The tour started with a welcome tea, and a short presentation regarding the history of the specific factory which included the evolution of the car industry in UK. The participants were then split into two groups, and were all given the necessary protective equipment before entering the production line accompanied by a guide. The tour guide was equipped with a microphone and all the participants with headphones so that they could hear him clearly as he guided them around the plant explaining in detail each section and activity they visited. The participants commented that they were impressed with this experience. The participants also had the opportunity to see and get any information about the “new” electric car “Nissan Leaf”. The visiting students will be attending the college classes, both theoretical and workshop, together with the students attending Clydebank campus. The programme will not only be of educational nature but will also offer the participants the opportunity to visit many of Scotlands museums, castles, historical sites. The main objective of the program is for the participants to gain further knowledge on the use of diagnostic equipment for best results and quality work in the market. This directly addressed by the program of the project. As an added advantage people from both countries will come in contact with foreign languages respectively as well as each others culture and way of life. These aims are directly reflected in the objectives of the project. On completion of the programme the participants will act as multipliers of the knowledge and experience they have gained. They will be responsible for transferring their knowledge and experience gained to the rest of the students, teaching staff and the ministry of education’s curriculum development department, where they will help to design the new curriculum for the course.
