New Skills for More Impact: Building EUROCLIO as a Learning Organisation

EUROCLIO - the European Association of History Educators organizes several larger and smaller professional development courses per year for history educators from across Europe, whereby there is always a part of the participants that use EU-funding for their participation. This Key Action 1 project offered a unique opportunity for the 4 staff members of the EUROCLIO Secretariat to obtain trainings themselves to further develop their professional competences. The participants have a background in history, European studies and international relations and all work with the member associations and European projects focusing on a wide range of topics. EUROCLIO endeavors to develop further as a truly pan-European network providing the filed with a cross-border viewpoint, a stronger representation and unique hub for working together. The project aimed to focus on competences that are crucial to the organisation’s functioning and sustainability, specifically fundraising, leadership, languages, inter-cultural communication and mediation skills. Within the project framework staff members participated in trainings in Germany, the United Kingdom, Austria and Belgium on diverse topics as transitional justice and education, and peace and conflict resolution, but also focusing on specific aspects of (history) education such as life long learning, educational policies and innovative educational methods. The impact of these experiences reached to the day-to-day work of the participants and helped them to better lead and coordinate the projects they do on sensitive topics, teaching about the EU using diverse teaching methods, and innovating history education. In addition, an important element of the project were training assignments abroad in Latvia, Germany, Norway and Denmark. EUROCLIO staff members provided training to their member associations on obtaining Erasmus+ Key Action 1 funding and association management in Denmark, trained an international group of educators on the use if the online platform Historiana and on the EUROCLIO project sharing history, cultural dialogues in the Black Sea Region in Germany and Latvia and re-established close relationship with partners and members in Norway, also providing training on fundraising and association management. The usually volunteer-based associations often struggle to sustain themselves and function independently and these trainings provided them with useful tools and competences to professionalize the association. The project enabled EUROCLIO to strengthen existing partnerships and build new ones, whereby further cooperation is planned with many of the partner organisations including new common projects, cooperation on the organisation of trainings, and further sharing of experiences and knowledge.
