The NEW EUROPE STORIES (NEST) project is focusing on the recent high literary achievements of the last 10 years in their linguistic and cultural diversity in the New Europe, in countries which have joined the EU during the last 10 years or would like to join in the near future. These countries are regarded and often referred to as the New Europe. They have a common or in much aspects similar or comparable past and recent experiences, they are facing similar challenges, dilemmas and future perspectives. We have chosen 9 books (a German, a Romanian, an Ukranian, a Polish, a Croatian, a Serbian, a Czech, a Latvian and a Slovakian novel) , which help our readers to face and reflect on the questions: Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going?Literature is the best way for sharing experiences, raising empathy, shaping and strenghtening collective identity. And it is exactly the means of literary translation, which helps to disseminate these possibilities and achievements crossborder, sharing experiences crossing the language barriers, raising awareness about similarities and differences, shaping collective identities, generate collective regional and European identities through personal and collective memories and reflections on shared experiences.National literatures are mirrors of the national identities, literary translation helps to open up windows and see and enjoy the literature and shared experiences from the neighbouring countriesstart to build regional identities, awareness of similarities and empathy for the differences on a regional basis, from the roots, as a possible basis for a common European identity and solidarity. With this project we would like to start this process from below, looking around in our neighbourhood, around our NEST, looking for and sharing NEW EUROPE STORIES.
