New Applications and Course Materials for Prosthetic Dentistry, Implant Dentistry and Biomedical Engineers

Manufacture of implants and other products in prosthetic and implant dentistry is gaining importance thanks to its many advantages. European Union countries have been conducting many studies and researches in this field for many years. Nowadays, because of increased demand and higher profit margin, hundreds of different brands from many countries produce dental implants. One of the most important problems starts at this point. Because of the production of these products are made abroad and can be imported to our country very easy and without regulations. On the other hand, there is a big problem on the education of dentists who will make treatments for these patients. It is known that these treatments are being made by dentists who just have course for 2-3 days. Also there are some dental technicians who have no permission and experiment to make these implementations. And we don't have any controlling mechanism for these implementations.Currently over 200 different brands of dental implants marketed in Turkey and the point of view that we have to worry is this; we have no law, agency or competent authority in order to control its import, marketing, quality and health standards. In other words, Turkish people are being used as volunteer experimental subject in a market which has the cost of annual balance sheet in excess of hundreds of million dollars. Although there are many companies from many different countries that produce implants, we don’t have a serious business concern in Turkey. However, in Turkey, There is a big gap on production of implants, approximately %90 of these products is being imported from other countries and the other %10 is manufactured without using high technology. The main aim of this project is to prepare education materials, web based learning tools, interactive web page, digital media (i.e. CD), curriculum, regulations, standards of treatments and controlling mechanisms for vocational training and manufacture of biomaterials which will be developed and implemented with the help of biomechanics to solve all mentioned problems. Then, overall results of the project will be collected in a digital media (i.e. CD) and they will be discussed in seminars.Approximate starting date of the project is January 2012 and the expected duration of the project is 24 months.
