The project "New Ways : Roma youth in Europe " was a trilateral youth exchange in Croatia for 60 participants with the goal of political education and awareness of the issue of discrimination / antiziganism and social participation . With this project we achieved to develop new ways to draw attention to the situation of Roma in South Eastern Europe, including the EU candidate country Croatia. The young people potentially affected by discrimination in Serbia, Croatia and Germany as well have been encouraged to stand up for their rights and to be active. Youth exchanges are a suitable means to arouse empathy for the people affected by discrimination and at the same time to overcome cultural barriers. Background of this project was on the one hand envisaged networking and cooperation of the regional actions of the participating partners. On the other hand, the current socio-political situation of minorities in the former states of Yugoslavia is a sufficient cause for engagement with discrimination. We worked on this quite successfully by following the approach of intercultural learning experience. Therefor the participants with different cultural, social, linguistic backgrounds experienced a week together and thereby got to know their differences and similarities and understood the issue. The focus of the workshops have been on the European Roma history and current problems and opportunities for participation of Roma in Europe - especially for young people. In this Youth Exchange participants had the opportunity to make an experience that strengthens them in dealing with the everyday experiences of poverty and marginalization (empowerment ). We expect a strengthening of the networking concept and sustainable awareness.
