Through this group of projects, young people from a wide range of European countries share the experience of living together, meeting together weekly with their common supervisor and contributing their enthusiasm and a real European dimension to the mental health services provided in Wales’ capital city, Cardiff. The volunteers come from a genuinely comprehensive range of educational and social backgrounds. Based on our successful integration of blind and deaf volunteers previously, special attention is given to the recruitment and integration of volunteers with disabilities, including profound sensory disabilities. One of the main objectives of the project is to break down stereotypes about young people and to combat the exclusion and stigmatism of people with mental health problems, while fostering inter-cultural dialogue among volunteers, staff and clients alike.The project involves 11 EVS volunteers at a time, within the Mental Health Directorate of Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust, based at Whitchurch Hospital, St David’s Hospital, the University Hospital of Wales and in associated community-based mental health projects in Cardiff. The role of the volunteers is to bring added value to the quality of care and support provided; most importantly, the volunteers are involved in talking to clients, companionship, accompanying clients on social, sporting and recreational activities and assisting their rehabilitation through socialisation and promotion of healthy lifestyle choices.Our staff have had a long connection with Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust’s Mental Health Directorate, supporting their work in various ways since 1997. We have received a number of volunteers from Netzwerk before and we have developed a good relationship with them, which we would like to continue and strengthen.
