Between June 1st, 2014 and June 30th, 2015, the Lower Silesian Chamber of Craft (LSCC) implemented the project “Learning The Craft In Europe” in the framework of the ERASMUS+ Programme. The idea of the project arose from the positive experience with the completion of previous projects – the test phase of individual traineeships for students and journeymen (64 people), project “Apprenticeship In European Countries” (111 people) and “Young Craftsmen In Europe” (70 people). The main objective of the project was to increase the mobility of Polish students, implement the issues covered by the programme of practical training at the European level, gain new experience in a new working environment and improve their skills. Furthermore, the students acquired experience in organization their workstation and cooperation in international teams. A very important aspect was also an improvement of language, getting to know the culture and traditions of the region and country as well as making contacts which would result in long-standing acquaintances. All project activities have positive results. Young man are aware now that it is worth to learn and broaden their horizon. It affected the development of student’s skills and improvement of their situation in the labour market. The project prevented young people from finishing their education too early. It also instilled their need for life-long learning. Within the project, 40 two-week VET traineeships in Germany and France were organized. The project participants were students from Lower Silesian vocational schools, at the age of 16-20, learning for craftsmen. The traineeships in French and German were prepared for four 10-person groups of students. Two international partners of the LSCC, Chamber of Crafts in Dresden and Chamber of Crafts in Poitiers, were cooperating within the project. They were responsible for choosing high-quality craftsman’s workshops which provided good education for students. The project partners have considerable experience in the implementation of traineeships. It guaranteed the highest quality of stay and education for the students. There were organized preparatory activities for the participants before every traineeship, e.g. informational meetings, educational and cultural preparation, and a language course. While during the traineeship, apart from practical education, the participants were able to see the most attractive cultural places of particular city or region. The participants received the Europass Mobility document (which is recognized in Europe) when they had returned to Poland. This document contains information about the place, time, traineeship objective and qualification acquired during their stay abroad. It is an additional advantage for the participants increasing their attractiveness on the labour market. From the moment of recruitment to the final settlement, the traineeships were systematically monitored. The evaluation was conducted by the project team and it concerned the recruitment, preparation, organization of the traineeship, and the settlement. The evaluation documentation include surveys, apprenticeship diaries, reports, financial documentation, etc. The project team contacted the project partner, the participants, their parents, accompanying person, schools and the training masters by phone and e-mail. The project results: completion of 40 two-week traineeships carrying out the cultural, language and educational preparation, an increase of linguistic competence of traineeship participants (vocational and trade vocabulary), acquisition of new professional skills needed to manage their own financial resources and free time, higher level of knowledge, higher competences, and higher motivation to learn (i.e. foreign languages). Moreover, an increase of self-confidence, learning about culture of the host country, as well as increased independence and a greater sense of duty. The LSCC is known in the region for organizing international traineeships. These activities encourage the students to pursue their education in vocational schools that allow having apprenticeships abroad. Thanks to the implementation of the traineeship projects, the cooperation between the chamber, guilds, schools and craftsmen has developed. The following issues are discussed: vocational education, journeyman’s and master’s exams, needs of small businesses. Problems of the craft environment begin to be perceived by local and state government better. Meetings and discussions on vocational education are often organized. Taken actions affect the cross-sector cooperation and strengthen the synergy effect between the education and work environment sectors. The contacts with the international partners are also strengthened. The Chamber’s several years of gained experience in the implementation of traineeships has demonstrated what a large role they play in the education of young people.
