"Learning - the Way to Success"The applicant in the project is Zespół Szkół Ogólnokształcących in Nidzica (Warmian-Masurian voivodeship) – a state school comprising middle and high school, attended by 330 students aged 13 to 19.After conducting a thorough analysis of strenghts and weaknesses of both our teaching staff and students, we set out three priority targets requiring improvement and quality enhancement:1) Development and improvement of education in the area of content-integrated language learning (CLIL). Our students achieve high test scores in external exams, particularly in Mathematics and Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics etc). Most of them go on to continue studying those subjects at universities. However, students’ test scores in English are lower. To improve the quality of language learning and teaching while meeting students’ interests and needs, we would like to introduce in our school content-integrated language learning. The first step in this direction would be organising extracurricular classes taught partly in English. In the long term, we are aiming at introducing in our school the International Baccalaureate programme. To ensure this, teachers require improvement with regard to their English language competences and training in using the CLIL methodology. 2) Improvement in the area of incorporating Information and Communication Technology into lessons – even though our school is well-equipped, with computers, laptops, interactive whiteboards etc., the majority of the teaching staff do not make use of the technology at their disposal. For our students ICT is an indispensable part of their everyday life and the best way to get them interested and involved in the learning proces.3) Development of European and international dimension of our school. The teachers in our school have named 2 main reasons for their reticence in involving themselves in international educational projects - lack of knowledge and know-how in developing and conducting them, as well as insufficient knowledge of English. By removing those obstacles, more teachers will actively and fully take part in international learning and teaching events, engaging themselves in projects already existing in our school and creating new endeavours.12 members of our faculty have been chosen to directly participate in the following project activities: Preparatory English language course for teachers with lower-level English language skills, conducted locally by teachers from our school; 2-week language improvement course abroad aimed at developing language fluency for all project participants; Specialized training courses in using ICT and CLIL during lessons, and a course on making our school more international- and Europe-oriented, as well as developing and managing international educational projects.Improvement of language skills of non-English teachers in our school will enable them to start creating their own international projects and allow them to become more involved in the existing ones. They will also become able to introduce integrated language learning to their lessons, teaching simultaneously both their subject and English. This, in turn, will motivate students and engage them in the educational processes, and in the future would give them a chance to take part in the International Baccalaureate programme. All teachers participating in specialized courses will develop and increase their knowledge of the CLIL method, learning how to use it in practice during their lessons. In this way, they will improve their teaching methods and create a new approach to their teaching process, making their classes more useful and productive.Teachers will also increase their usage of ICT during their lessons, which will therefore become more attractive, relevant and engaging for students. With our project and all its planned activities, we are striving to improve and enhance the overall quality of teaching and learning processes in our school, providing teachers with new skills and knowledge, and students with effective opportunities to use them. The project would bring the following long-term benefits for our institution: A significant increase in the quality of English language teaching and learning, resulting in higher external examination results; Possible future implementation of the International Baccalaureate programme which, apart from positively influencing the quality of education, would make the school more attractive for both students and their parents and potentially increase the enrollment. A greater numer of international educational projects would make our school more Europe-oriented, creating a positive image of the school among students, teachers and local community and preparing our students to live as part of European community.
