Nature Centres and Environmental Interpretation in the Baltic Sea Region (BSR EAGLE)

Interreg IIIB project BSR EAGLE Nature Centres and Environmental Interpretation in the Baltic Sea Region brings together nature interpreters and nature education centres from 10 Baltic Sea Region countries to network and to improve skills.The vision of the project was to improve the role and contribution of nature centres and environmental interpretation as a part of the society's strengthening of sustainable development through education and public participation in relation to protection of environment, natural, cultural and social values and health of the public. To realise this, 49 institutions, mostly public and NGOs, carried out an extensive programme of activities in cooperation with partners, colleagues and stakeholders.Achievements WP1 Elaboration of National and BSR Nature Education Strategy; The network of Nature Interpreters and Nature Schools is strengthened by National Strategies for nature education development, project partners Trans National Strategy and Strategic research.WP2 Improving existing Nature Centres and establishing Pilot Centres in Estonia and LatviaThematic expositions were produced, nature trails built up and new methodical thematic programs published. Existing nature schools were improved. In Sweden, Uddevalla municipality got the EU EMAS Award 2005. The pilot nature centre in Alatskivi, Estonia, was finalized and new nature center in Palade, Estonia, is developed in cooperation with local municipality, county administration and state Environmental fund.WP3 Building up network of Nature Centres by exchange of experience and best practiceExtensive twinning and exchange of experience on Nature Interpretation for specialists was carried out e.g. at seminars and conferences. New Marine Network was established and activated, and three transnational network methodic seminars arranged.WP4 Training of nature centre staff members and environmental interpreters, working out new methods and training materialsCurricula for training programs was elaborated and carried out for specialists in Estonia and Finland in transnational cooperation. Evaluation and training for interpreters was arranged and study material was published.WP5 Propagation of project results and marketing of Nature Centres; Dissemination was carried out on web pages and via TV, radio, newspapers and magazines. The web page of the project contained updated information on the project and will remain at the network’s disposal afterwards. Preparations were made to launch an international biological nomenclature database in 5 languages.
