Mytham French Language Development Initiative

At Mytham we have been teaching languages for many years and have had a good relationship with the local high school who were able to help and support us in language teaching. Recently though the high school changed its status from being a language school and can no longer support us as in the past.Although our languages provision is good it could be improved. Our staff lack confidence in their ability to teach French and so we essentially have one member of staff delivering the French curriculum. WE need to address this vulnerability asapAs the financial climate changes and also the statutory elements for KS2 begin to be judged by Ofsted we aim to raise the profile of the subject , engage staff, motivate staff to come forward to take part in the project and increase their skills. They will then be able to deliver session to pupils across the school from Early Years though to Y5. We have an experienced Languages teacher/ subject lead. Recently she has been guiding the Senior Leadership Team through changes to the Modern Foreign languages curriculum. We therefore feel that our staff will greatly benefit from this project so we can become more confident and independent in our teaching.This is a development programme. Participants will be very clear from the outset that there are expectations and that the impact is not only on their own personal development but also that there is a positive impact for the quality of language provision at Mytham. We intend to enrol 7 members of staff on a French Immersion project running over 2 years.Headteacher / Teacher who is subject leader /2 teachers and 3 teaching assistants. We will use the funding to engage a company, PQ France, which specialises in these projects with a high degree of success. They organise the transport/ accommodation / French course / food arrangements and a visit to a French primary school. The staff will attend a 8 day course in South West France course ' French for Primary schools' Participants will develop ;-language skills -Cultural awareness-pedagogy- confidence This will be underpinned by a focus on effective teaching and learning pedagogy in a French school. The initial visit will be for participants to be able to develop their language skills to such a degree that they can confidently deliver lessons back a Mytham. As this is personal to each then the learning journey for each participant will be different.There will be preparation meetings in which participants will have a general introduction to the French language. - PQ France will set up communication between the English staff and the French staff hosts so that they can begin to communicate in advance of the visit. This way they will be familiar with each other before they first meet. There are 4 areas where we expect to see and impact. There will be measurable targets for each of these. The detail of these has yet to be finalised but essentially they will be;Participants;- significant improvement of their competence with understanding , speaking and writing French- significant increase in their confidence around their French language skill and an increased knowledge of the culture of FrancePupils; - standard of their French abilities will be significantly better than before the start of the project- Pupils will enjoy learning the language- Pupils will have a detailed understanding of the cultural aspects of the South West region of France School; - Quality of language provision will improve .- It will be evident to all stakeholders that French is the predominant Modern Foreign Language taught at Mytham and it is taught very well Parents; - Will be impressed by the French language provision at Mytham as a result of the increasing competence of their children-Prospective parents will be keen for their children to have the language opportunities Mytham offers A comprehensive final report will be written by the project planning team . This will evaluate the impact using a range of evidence. The outcomes will be celebrated and share will all the stakeholders including .. staff, pupils ,parents, Governors, the French schools and the local authorityAs a result of carefully monitoring by senior leaders and on going professional development opportunities for participants we hope that the benefits of this project will be sustainable and long lived .
