Considering the current Euro Crisis and the resulting high percentage of youth unemployment in some countries (e.g. 41.6% in Italy), career orientation is becoming more and more important for young Europeans nowadays.
Our project “My future in Europe” is the result of a cooperation between Europaschule Gymnasium Hamm in Hamburg, Germany, IISPT Via Pedemontana in Palestrina, Italy, and Ihsan Mermerci Anadolu Lisesi in Istanbul, Turkey. It aims at preparing students from the age of 15 for their future life after school by showing them the wide range of possibilities of education, employment and lifelong learning in Europe. In that way, students can become aware of their current opportunities and future prospects and thus, be able to choose the most appropriate profession for themselves.
For the whole duration of the project, groups of about 15 students are going to meet regularly and work on the project in clubs at each participating school. 5 students per group (different each time) are going to participate in transnational learning activities and share their experiences and results with the others afterwards.
As an introduction, we are going to analyze and compare school systems, vocational trainings, university studies, job profiles and employment possibilities in the countries involved (Italy, Turkey, Germany) and within Europe in general. The material and the presentations resulting are going to be modified and prepared for e-modules on the topic and made accessible on Open Educational Ressources (OER).
In the course of the project, we are going to visit different companies, schools and universities in the participating countries and the students are going to interview staff and experts.
Moreover, we are going to deal with application matters: Students are going to learn how to write letters of application and CV in their mother tongue and in English, and train for job interviews and assessment centers. Taking part in a simulation game, the students are also going to get familiar with the perspective of employers. On the basis of all the experiences gained, we are going to create a “CV-Guide” – an application guide for applications in Europe.
In addition, we are going to document our project in an exhibition, a film and on a website. Hence, our results will be accessible at school, in the school area and on OER, so that they can be used in various schools and organizations in the context of career education.
The final stage of our project will be a discussion of the Euro Crisis, the employment situation and the youth unemployment in Europe, prepared and led by the students on the basis of the knowledge and experience they have gained during the project.
All the activities, language courses and stays abroad will be documented in EUROPASS. Thus, students will learn how to use this important European instrument in the future.
Finally, the project results will be implemented into the schools' curricula and become a useful and sustainable instrument for European career education.
Parallel to the pursuit of these objectives, we want to discover our mutual cultures, traditions, landscapes and languages. In order to motivate our students, we have planned four exchanges between our schools, which include a short language course each.
Concerning the contact between the partner schools involved, we are going to keep it up regularly thanks to ICT and networking such as e-mail, a website, e-twinning, Skype, Facebook etc.
Youth is OUR FUTURE - let us prepare them for THEIR FUTURE!
