Multilingual Virtual Simulated Patient Project

The proposal for this project is based on the concrete results of a previous (privatelyfinanced) project initiated in 2006 by the IAVANTE Foundation and the University ofGranada, called the “Virtual Simulated Patient” (VSP). It is a computational system thatbehaves and responds as a real patient would during an interview with his or her doctor.Replying to questions about symptoms and illnesses etc., the simulator providesadditional support to healthcare professional training in the same way as the actorsusually employed as simulated patients. The tutor can choose between various “basepatients” and modify them adding one or more illnesses. Once defined, the VSPs modifytheir answers according to their cultural level, emotional state, psychological profile aswell as the development of the interview. The interaction with the “digital person” is donethrough computer generated 3D image synthesis, and the generation and synthesis ofthe natural language.Based on this experience, the Multilingual Virtual Simulated Patient (MVSP) aims toelaborate a MVSP that can interact with healthcare professionals in 7 languages andthat also incorporates the cultural differences of the native speakers in these countries. The project aims to create not only a series of VSPs for different cultures for use inhealthcare training in their respective countries, but also a second model of the virtualperson that would represent a minority immigrant population in each country. This modelwould incorporate all the appropriate ethnic cultural responses expected from a realnon-native patient and will be a valuable incorporation of cross cultural aspects into thetraining, opening up a wide range of possibilities.
