Multidisciplinar approach to improve the competences of VET teachers for early childhood education

Most of children disorders were detected very late and they did not receive special attention till they were older than three. However, since it is vital that signs of learning disabilities are recognised as early as possible, so that parents can help their children reach their highest potencial. In those cases, the role of teachers is a key point in the child development. Therefore, they should be able to detect the problems as early as possible. In most EU countries, initial teacher education for early childhood education takes place at a VET level and the European studies establish that the basic education students receive in special needs education is often too general, vague or insufficient, and for this reason they do not have enough competences and skills.Regarding this need, the general aim of MATE project achieved the transfer of practical tools tested for teachers at University levels, to use them with VET Early Childhood Education teachers and so it increased their skills related to child development early detection of disorders.MATE project brought together a team of high-level experts with very extensive experience in the area of VET early childhood education with experts in child development. There were five partners from three different countries; and the consortium members were drawn from different parts of Europe with similar problems. We were two partners from Spain (P0 - expert in child development and improving skills of teachers at University levels, and, P4 - a public VET school to develop the pilot experience and to transfer the results to the education regional authority to which it belonged), two partners in Turkey (P2 - provincial educational directorate with some expertise in a similar project developed in the last years, and, P3 - the education regional authority to transfer the results to the public VET system), and one partner in Italy (P1 - VET early childhood teachers who were working in kindergardens).The main outcomes consisted on a European comparative study on 'Early childhood education teachers in Europe and their resources to work with children with disorders', a practical digital course for VET early childhood teachers, and a MATE forum where all the VET early childhood teachers have access to be in contact with experts in child development and other VET teachers. These outcomes are always in English to facilitate free access to Internet to all European VET early childhood teachers; the course is available in four languages.In relation to the direct scope of MATE consortium, the expectations have reached at least 569 teachers and 368 different schools, moreover, they will be the 100% of VET schools and teachers in each region, and moving to a national level, in other regions of the same country, at least a 50% in the framework of the project dissemination activities. Apart from that, it was spread to other countries in the UE, USA and Latin America.
