Date du début: 1 juil. 2014, Date de fin: 30 juin 2016 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Barnave Middle High School is located in St Egreve. This town of 18 000 inhabitant, just at the foot of the Chartreuse Mountain, in the Isère valley , is connected to Grenoble-Alpes Métropole. From 2012 to 2014 Barnave Middle High School launched a COMENIUS project called « It’s my nature » revolving around the themes of poetry, nature and the protection of environment. Moreover, this very active school also has a Cinéma class that was a partner of the Comenius Regio Grenoble / Pavie, a Moutain Class, an Architecture project, an exchange with Germany and a regular trip to Rome. The Comenius project, launched in 2012, had a real impact in the school and allowed the start of a dynamic process of international opening. The school wanted to take advantage of the positive emulation created by this project by launching an other project aimed at breaking boredom, decreasing underperfoming at school and allowing student to act efficiently on their learning process. Concerning our goals, we wanted to think about a common process inside the school to increase student and teacher’s motivation. We wanted to develop the curiosity, the will and the pleasure of learning to allow students to get to know themselves better so they could develop the learning strategies that correspond them best. It would also allow students dropping out of school to find a space inside the school where they could be valued and at ease, meaning that we wanted to developp self esteem and self confidence among the students. We wanted to use every positive aspects we could find among these students and use them to act on the development of self confidence to increase their performances. With our different mobilities we wanted to learn, to exchange and come back with new ideas that we could try in our classrooms. We also wanted to make our students aware of how important foreign langages are to communicate with other people from the European Union and make their develop their opening toward Europe and European citizenship. The teachers taking part in the mobilities are volunteer with different profiles : - teachers already fluent in English, 3 of them were involved in the Comenius Project. They wanted to take advantage of the positive impact of this project to keep on opening the school toward international and use their mobility to observe and bring back positive and motivating experiences. - a teacher, fluent in English, wanting to be immersed in a foreign school in Italy to discover other ways of functionning and to see how they take care of students in difficulties, what solutions they have to avoid students repeating a year and how they adress motivation. - teachers and member of the school board wanting to improve their English in order to take part in future international or cross disciplinary projects. - Physics and Science teachers aiming at teaching their subject in English but also wanting to learn how to use new technologies and bring back new and motivating teaching material to their classrooms. During these 2 years we set up some activities such as : challenges « questions pour un champion » to test their knowledge, paper chases, treasure hunts, inventions, riddles, rebus, little explorers, role play, dialogues, sketches, promotion of the students talents… We launched a logo contest on the theme of motivation « MOTIV’ACTIONS ». Our winning logo is sent as an attached document. We set up science labwork in which students did the same experiences they had done in class but in a more playful way that would interest drop out students better. We set up SKYPE session to communicate with our collegue’ students in Italy. With all these actions, we thought about a common process to increase student and teacher’s motivation. We set in motion a collective process that allow every student to improve his level of expertise and knowledge. It was well received by the students since they more often tell us « Oh, we saw it in English or in Physics ». They understood that instead of an individual process, they were now evolving in a collective process that allows them to develop their curiosity and the pleasure of learning. We noted that the different workshop and activities allowed drop out students to find a space where they would be more valued and interested than before. This enable them to develop their self esteem and their self confidence. To make them realise how important foreign langages are to comunicate, we developed the practise of English inside the Science lessons.
