Integrated studies in the comprehensive schoolMeeting the demands of the renewal of the National Core Curriculum in 2016 is the main motive for our Erasmus+ project. The core curriculum reform emphasizes the role of interdisciplinary learning experiences and collaboration across subjects. In addition to creating integrative study opportunities in our curriculum, we are highly interested in increasing collaboration with partners outside the school. Hämeenkylä School has recently become a comprehensive school (grades 1 to 9), therefore, we believe our staff is in need of practical ideas for increasing cooperation between students of different age groups. The main goal of the project is to gain experience and to share ideas especially regarding integrated studies. We hope to develop pedagogical methods to be taken into practice in the everyday life in our school in order to meet the demands of the new curriculum by focusing on the following themes:1. Planning and implementation of interdisciplinary learning experiences2. Cooperation between students of different age groups3. Meaningful and effective cooperation with partners outside the schoolOur Erasmus-team consists of the headmaster, the vice headmaster, a special education teacher, a teacher for the preparatory class, a classroom teacher and three subject teachers (all subject areas represented). We have in common the enthusiasm to develop as teachers and professionals in our school community. Our project consists of two groups of four. The first one, will participate in a school visit in Monreal in Spain. The school in Monreal is a small school of 45 students in a small village. The school is accustomed to putting into practice extensive interdisciplinary projects. Therefore the school in Spain is an appropriate choice as a collaboration partner for our project. We anticipate to get and share new ideas by a Job Shadowing period of one week, accompanying teachers and students in their daily school activities as well as following collaborations outside their school. The other team of four will participate in a school visit in El Ejido in Southern Spain. The school in El Ejido is a large comprehensive school of 630 pupils, around the same size as Hämeenkylä School. Our goals are as mentioned above concerning the school in Monreal, however, in addition we hope to get experiences in organizing comprehensive interdisciplinary projects specifically in a larger school environment that is comparable to ours. Our goal is to get new insights of integrated studies to implement in practice in our own work. We hope to expand the way we perceive teaching, not solely concentrating on our own subjects, but to find new ways of fulfilling interdisciplinary learning experiences for our pupils. In addition, we are eager to share our experiences and insights we receive during the Job Shadowing-period with our colleagues and thus implementing what we have learned in our whole school community. The Erasmus +programme will help us in meeting the demands of the new core curriculum and at the best to be able to increase the positive and versatile lerning experiences of our students.
