The world is changing, the school must as well. Globalization and multiculturalism encourage to teach the youth how to make sense out of diversity, be open to changes and socialize within the developing environment. One of the main goals of the nowadays school is to prepare young people for successful integration to the international community, to accept and to overcome challenges in life whilst growing within the global society. The swift changes in modern day life raise new requirements and expectations for teachers – to evolve, to develop her competences and to gain new – to continue learning.
The modern school calls for evolution of the teacher-student relationship, which should be reflected through application of new pedagogical methods, forms, and different criteria for learning progress evaluation.
First glance at the nowadays world dominated by informative and communicative technologies might leave a false impression that the role of the school is diminishing since it is no longer the sole provider of information and knowledge.
The teacher, who works at school, has to constantly improve, raise her qualification and competences. Teacher has to adapt in order to continue fostering morale and encourage cultural, social and economic development. All of us are discussing the 21st century School in terms of different approach to education. However, we are uncertain about ways to implement it. Teacher makes the school. This ancient pedagogical wisdom is relevant and valid today as well. The more of us, teachers, will be open to development, interested in innovations, raise their qualification, collaborate and exchange best practice knowledge with their colleagues abroad, search for and apply modern and teaching methods that would help to better reach the student, the more the school will develop and become attractive to and welcoming to the student. Meanwhile the teachers will increase their impact nation-wide by sharing best practices and improving collectively.
The aim of this project is to encourage the teachers to be open to changes and adaptation, to develop faculty and administrative staff’s competences and skills. Also, it strives to raise their qualification whilst gathering international experience and knowledge. The project aims to develop their capacities to successfully apply the acquired skills and knowledge regarding the modern teaching methods together with the introduction of European and international dimensions in their work in order to guarantee higher quality of education. Based on the conclusions of the external audit and the in depth structural self-analysis, the school has become aware of the specific aspects that require further development. Thus, taking into consideration the school’s strategic plan for 2014-2016, the particular areas were decided as development priorities: innovation, introduction and application of active pedagogical methods that encourage student co-operation during lessons, improvement of student’s motivation through application of diverse and engaging teaching methods, interdisciplinary integration, and innovative methods in teaching foreign languages. The mentioned priorities are focused on improving the quality of lessons. Meanwhile, the opportunities to raise teacher’s qualification abroad and to develop the European competences directly correspond to our school’s priorities and with our school’s mission, especially considering its affiliation with ELOS. The courses were selected according to the compatibility with the school development priorities and carefully selected based on the provided detailed course plans, which were discussed and coordinated with the course providers. The geographical location is contingent. During the project, faculty and administrative staff will participate in the “Benshmarking" course in Finland and will take advantage of the possibility to get closely acquainted with one of the best education systems in Europe as illustrated by its students’ high performance according to international criteria. The courses will introduce the participants to application of innovative methods, possible ways to renew the pedagogical and educative content, means to create an innovative and engaging learning environment. Whilst visiting various schools in Finland, the participants will get acquainted with Finnish school model and the specificities of teaching methodology, meanwhile whilst visiting schools in Tallinn, the participants will observe how the Estonians are applying and integrating the Finnish school model to their schools. Throughout the course of the project, we aim to get closer to the Finnish school model an and its introduction to our schools, meanwhile, we also aspire to acquire and apply the new and innovative teaching-learning methods that we will explore during the up-coming courses in Spain, Greece, Italy and the United Kingdom in our practice. If teachers develop – so will the school for the biggest benefit of the students.
