Model Discover Manipulate: a method for non formal learning of mathematics
Date du début: 1 déc. 2016, Date de fin: 30 nov. 2018 PROJET  TERMINÉ

The PISA results (2012) show that 22.1% of European students were low achievers in maths. Which means that more than one out of five youngsters in Europe is not equipped with that basic skill necessary for numerous valuable job in our current economy. The Commission has the objective to lower this number to 15% in 2020 but, so far, in many countries the progression is weak when the level is not simply lowering. One of the most reason for it is the lack of engagement of the youngsters who have a very negative perception of mathematics: most kids start mathematics with the idea already implemented in the brain that mathematics is difficult, harsh. To counter that, there is a movement is emerging in the last 10 -15 years all around Europe with the creation of museums, centres or houses of mathematics to promote a non-formal approach of the mathematics who has a proven effect on the mathematic skill of the youngsters and above all on their engagement with mathematics. However, the spaces dedicated to this approach of maths are still only a few… This shortage is due to the lack of knowledge about the approach and the difficulty to find the appropriate resources and content. So the partners with the clear object of addressing underachievement in the basic skills of maths, decided to gather to create a project that aims at increasing the awareness and practice of the increase of the spaces dedicated to non-formal approach of mathematics in the European Union. In order to do that, partners will create:1. A booklet on the efficiency of the non-formal approach of mathematics and a practical Guidebook on the creation of spaces dedicated to the non-formal approach of mathematics. 2. A database of tools, games, activities and stations available in OpenSource 3. The first 2 math exhibitions, scientifically and pedagogically accurate, in OpenSource with blueprints and tutorialsThe booklet will explain why it is useful to create dedicated spaces (permanent or not) while the practical Guidebook will explain to create dedicated spaces from the genesis of the creation to its daily life passing by the creation steps and the necessary quality standards. Available in 5 languages, the documents will support raise the awareness about the approach and the creation of such spaces while the creation of the database and the 2 exhibitions have the purpose to ease the acquisition of the most important part of such spaces: its content. But the spaces and the content would not be efficient without the understanding of each pieces by the workers, which is why all the tools will provide detailed instructions and will have a video tutorial available online. With this creation, we, therefore hope to have the following impact at several level:Local impact• Increase of the quality level of the mathematical education possibilities• Increasing the quantity of tools available for the institutions, which would lead to an increase of the quality for the visitors/learners.• Supplement of skills for the specialized workers• Increased capacity of experimenting, innovating and contributing to change in the educational sector• Developed and maintained close, lasting and productive ties with other educative institutions in the sectors of reference• Increase of the awareness about non-formal learning of mathematics National impact• Increased awareness on the possibilities and benefits of the non-formal learning of mathematics• Increase of the number of spaces dedicated to non-formal approach of mathematics (permanents or not)• Increase of the numbers of youngsters in contact with the approach with the following consequence:• Raised level of mathematical motivation level, interest on the topic and the mathematical skills of the youngsters • Improvement of the quality in education• New competences and skills of workers should lead to possible new creation of new educational products on national levels • Developed and maintained close, lasting and productive ties with other educative institutions in the sectors of referenceEuropean impact• Guidebookand booklet in 5 languages (ES, FR, IT, DE, EN) able to be adapted into other contexts• Awareness of target groups (EU level) on the use of non-formal learning of mathematics • Involvement of umbrella associations and conferences: European Mathematical Society, European Mathematical Information Service, MATRIX, Ecsite, Matrix, Festa della Scienza, Math Week, etc.• Involvement of mathematical societies in Europe such as DMV (DE), RSME (ES). Even outside of Europe such a NIMS (Korea) or AIMS (Africa)• Creation of more spaces (permanents or not) dedicated to the non-formal learning of mathematics• Increase use of the non-formal approach of mathematics• Developed and maintained close, lasting and productive ties with other educative institutions in the sectors of reference
