The main aim of the project called "Transnational mobility for attractive employment prospect", which was carried out by Technical Mechanical Secondary School No 2 in Białystok (Polish name of school: Zespół Szkół Mechanicznych Centrum Kształcenia Praktycznego Nr 2) was to suport 36 students of the school in European mobility programme. It involved raising student’s professional and cultural development in order to improve their future quality and attractiveness on European job markets connected with their professions. Appointing the students who finally took part in the programme was based on a careful diagnosis of their training process as well as an in-depth analysis of their specific needs outlined in students’ application forms. Special support and attention was given to students from economically-challenged families from rural and underdeveloped areas. Research conducted by school pedagogues revealed that approximately 40% of our students have been in such underprivileged situation. Participation in this project gave them a unique chance to gain a good professional and language training in a foreign country. Before taking part in their apprenticeship abroad, students were instructed about possible cultural differences and anticipated communication problems. They also revised andlearned English and German vocabulary (depending on the group), connected both with their future profession and with everyday situations. While in host countries students were being trained in the trades of mechanical technician, mechatronics technician and motor vehicle technician. The training period lasted two weeks (10 workdays), in accordance with the school curriculum framework. The assigned tasks corresponded with the curriculum description of practical vocational training. The project involved two weeks’ practical training in leading mechanics and mechatronics industry companies in Berlin, Germany (chosen by BERLINK ETN GmbH) as well as the automotive industry companies in Portsmouth, UK (choice of companies in cooperation with Training Vision Ltd.) as well as two more weeks in Polish companies. During their internship, students who are being trained in the trade of mechanical technician became acquainted with modern production technologies using CNC machines as well as acquired new skills in operating CNC lathing machines and milling machines. Mechatronics technicians became acquainted with automation technologies as well as devices and components of control and regulation systems, practical assembly of systems with the use of hydraulics and pneumatics, units and components in electrical and electronic devices and mechatronic systems . Motor vehicle technicians acquired new skills and qualifications in state-of-the-art methods of vehicle diagnosing, vehicle maintenance and repair actions Apart from professional development, the project helped students develop their intercultural competence through cultural and pedagogical experience, including language workshops which largely enriched students’ professional language. There was also a number of bonding meetings that involved our students in the exchange of cultural experience with students from other countries. They also had a chance to take part in afternoon activities such as sightseeing and learning about foreign cultures and history. Students’ internship in companies in Germany and England has certainly improved the quality of their education in the field of scientific, technical and cross-cultural expertise. The project allowed them to explore the occupational environment and work ethic in foreign workplaces, which is crucial in the development of adaptability to the European labour market. The acquired professional, cultural and linguistic competence will influence the participants’ educational , professional and intercultural mobility in the future. Last but not least, the mobility programme has also helped students get rid of harmful stereotypes about other nations and cultures, and xenophobia, which are becoming a serious European problem, partly due to lack of mobility possibilities among underprivileged parts of societies. Students’ newly-acquired knowledge and skills have been certified with Europass Mobility Certificates in order to increase their professional mobility within the European Union.
