TERMINÉ
Our school “Goethe-Gymnasium/Rutheneum since 1608” (ca.600 students; 80 teachers) specializes in languages and music. From Year 5 onwards English and either French, Russian or Latin are taught. In Year 9 students choose a third foreign language (French, Russian, Latin or Spanish) or specialize in music, i. e. have special music lessons. In Years 9 and 10 all students attend bilingual modules and projects (50 lessons) in subjects like Economy and Law, History, Ethical Education, Music, Geography and Biology. Every student receives a certificate.
Our school takes part in several projects on a European and international scale. We offer courses for “German as a foreign language and cultural studies” (organized by PAD) to Danish students, have exchange programmes with twin schools in Perm (Russia) and Fort Wayne (USA) and organize study visits to England and France on a regular basis.
Teachers from Ireland, France and the UK have already taught at our school and students from foreign countries have spent and spend their exchange years here.
One aim of our mobility project in education is to guarantee and improve the standards of our bilingual modules and projects. At the moment eleven teachers of the CLIL subjects mentioned lead the modules and projects in cooperation with the English or French teachers of the classes. Two more teachers (of History and Biology) would like to take part in CLIL courses in July 2015 to support and expand the existing team. This course focuses on new methods of motivation, the use of new media and the improvement of English language skills. Participants learn how to plan bilingual lessons, how to make them more interesting and varied and how to use authentic texts in the CLIL classroom. They also learn how to apply the principles of modern CLIL methodology and didactics. Above all, they are expected to help their colleagues, coordinate cooperation and inform other teachers about the chances and benefits of CLIL courses supported by Erasmus Plus to encourage them to become a member of the bilingual team at our school. Last but not least, participants of CLIL courses will introduce students and parents to the benefits and methods of bilingual learning and teaching.
Four teachers of English want to attend “English Teacher Refresher Courses for Secondary Teachers” (Advances Language & Methodology) in 2015 and 2016 - not only to brush up on their command of English, but also to improve their competences linked to their professional profile with a view to innovating and achieving a better quality of teaching.
All colleagues taking part in the Mobility Projects are carefully chosen because they are both highly committed and competent as well as willing to develop a greater understanding and responsiveness to social, linguistic and cultural diversity, a broader understanding of practices, policies and systems in education etc., which will result in the improvement of intercultural awareness and skills. This will eventually lead to a better quality of their work and activities in favour of students, increased support for and promotion of mobility activities for our students and, of course, increased motivation and satisfaction in their daily work.
In the long run an increased capacity to operate at EU/international level, reinforced cooperation with partners from other countries, better qualifications of our teaching staff, improved youth work methods and practices to actively involve young people to improve their personal development and employability in the European labour market and beyond is expected. Participants are able to raise their awareness and understanding of other cultures and develop a sense of European citizenship and identity and ensure a better recognition of competences gained through the learning periods abroad.
