Na rovině elementary school is a non-state school established by a citizens association. It applies Montessori approach, project-based learning and a respectful approach to both pupils and teachers. We focus on heterogeneaous classes where pupils of three different years organise their work by themselves according to their yearly plans, work both individually and in groups. There is a high percentage of pupils with special educational needs in one heterogeneous class. What’s more, our school registers approximately thirty homeschoolers. Thanks to a Comenius programme of 2012 we heard about a Storyline method and its potential to be applied in a heterogeneous class. This method had not been used to teach English as a foreign language in the Czech Republic until recently. It is only NaZemi organisation who has applied the method in global education.
The Storyline method was developed in Scotland. It aims at influencing the pupils´ approach to topics on global level. This method has also been used in teaching English language in the way that pupils work on a particular topic for a longer time (e.g. three months). Weaker learners as well as more confident ones work on the level that corresponds with their needs. Thanks to a natural motivation the pupils make the most of their skills and abilities with better ease. Creativity, imagination, fantasy, drama and especially communication skills are supported.
The aim of the project was to educate a team of English teachers who would be able to combine the year-round project topic of the school with the education of English language as well as effectively apply the Storyline method to activate the pupils, develop their communication skills and sthrenghten their educational competency. Particular attention was paid to supporting the education of pupils with special educational needs who are integrated in our school as well as supporting English learning among homeschoolers registered with our school. Two teachers employed with the school on a long term basis have taken part in the project. One teacher has been teaching English in our school in classes for older pupils for 6 years. The second teacher worked in primary classes during all subjects, she was responsible for managing and examining our homeschoolers and she is also a special needs teacher.
Activities carried out:
1. preparatory – self-study of available literature on the Storyline method and other sources on www.storyline-scotland.com website

Na rovině team familiar with the Storyline method is going to further their experience in the following year. In September 2016 this project will be introduced at a Storyline conference in Halle, Germany, as a part of a programme aimed at further education of teachers. This conference will be organised by a lecturer who is a member of Storyline Germany. We are planning sharing experience regarding the Storyline method with a teacher of another school within another EU programme next school year. We have started cooperating with teachers who have become interested in the method and we have been preparing further activities connected with Storyline. In the future we would like to hold a one week summer school on the Storyline method and visit a school in Scotland or Germany using the method. We have been taking steps in order to become accredited in the Storyline method within the programme of further education for teachers.
