It is the aim of the school that:
New methods and materials adopted
Teachers continually re-asses their attitudes towards education
Teachers continually professionalise
School comes into contact with other secondary schools in Europe in order to broaden our network and start new eTwinning projects with our students with regard to English language skills and European awareness.
Broaden knowledge and skills of individual teachers with regard to lesson material and dealing with pupils
New ways of teaching (specifically regular English courses as opposed to TTO English)
New ways of teaching in the teams (also other school subjects)
International contacts with a potential for future eTwinning projects.
Participant profile :
Miss Kelder graduate cum laude from the University of Groningen. She has a BA and MA en English Language and Culture and a ResearchMaster Classical, Medieval and Renaissance Studies. In addition she has a first degree teaching certificate to teach English as well as several internationally recognized TEFL certificates. She continually aims to professionalise by attending educational workshops both within school and in a broader context every year.
In addition to this miss Kelder was an 'Eerst de Klas' trainee (modeled on the English 'Teach First' project). This traineeship is initiated by the Dutch government, education and bussiness with the aim of attracting university educated teachers to teach in secondary education.
Description of activities and methods.
In preparation the teacher composes a written document that outlines the personal learning aims and the objected outcomes for the school in agreement with the teamleader and head of the English department. This will be send to 'Pilgrims' in advance.
Pilgrims also has an intake procedure with a questionnaire and needs analysis so that the content of the course will meet the needs of the participant and school.
The following will be part of the course
- ways of presenting and practicing grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation
- Using music, story, pictures, fine arts and drama in your teaching
- encouraging learner independence in class
- dealing with different learning styles, mixed abilities and difficult behaviour
- encouraging pair/group work at different levels
- adapting/supplementing course book materials
- using texts for different purposes
- CLIL (content and language integrated learning)
- Ideas for assessment/testing
In addition the teacher will be intensively working together with teachers from across Europe. These contacts are extremely valuable with regard to potential future new eTwinning projects for our school and for European awareness (of both teachers and pupils). It is also important for professionalisation of the teacher.
Of course the teacher will keep her own English language skills up to speed in the process.
The teacher will evaluate the course with the participants and course institute (Pilgrims) at the end of the first week and after finishing the two week course.
In September 2015 the teacher will report in writing and verbally to teamleader and head of department.
In September and Oktober 2015 the knowledge and experience is spread through the school with the help of presentations and workshops, organised by the teacher.
With the help op questionnares and interviews, the pupils will be asked to evaluate the efficiency of the newly implemented methods. Their motivation level will be checked for as well as will their test results.

- Broader didactic knowledge and skills will be spread throughout the school via the participant.
- The participant maintains her level of English language skills.
- More joined initiatives to share/make new materials and adopt new strategies in the English department and across teaching teams
