Methoden zur Verbesserung von Schulorganisation und Unterricht an Gymnasien mit Sportprofil

Lahti: Lahden Lyseo is a school with about 800 students. Students in Finland only decide in the last three years what kind of school to visit. To be able to visit an Upper Secondary School students have to apply and the school selects applicants according to the amount of places the school offers. Sport students have to pass a practical test including an interview. However, results may differ drasticallly as various criteria are important: the interview and credits given by sport associations. One crucial difference compared to the Bavarian school organization is that in Finland the school year is divided into five periods during which students take various courses, some of which are obligatory and others voluntary. Sport students’ obligatory courses differ though. At the end of every period there are final exams, but there are extra exams for the A-levels, and only A-level grades matter when one wants to go to university or do a vocational training. Usually sport students, who come from all over Finland, are allowed to take less courses during winter periods and when they are away for training camps or competitions internet platforms provide contents discussed in classes. There are no teachers who accompany the students. At school, there are full-time tutors who help students to organize and choose the courses they take and some teachers are trainers and teachers at the same time. The school is very well-equipped and students get free lunch at school. Steinkjer: Both school offer (top)athletes the possibilty to combine school and sports. The project’s aim was to get to know the school systems and to anaylse and compare advantages and disadvantages in dealing with the problems that occur to develop strategies to improve the given situations. Teachers from Oberstdorf (StD Horst Weiß, StD Jürgen Brandl, OStR'in Andrea Wölfle-Holzmann, StR'in Sabina Schmitt, StR'in Ulrike Hoehne) took part in discussions, got to know the school and the Norwegian school system, training facilities and spoke to members of the community. Problems were basically: to reduce the amount of missed subject material, to optimize communication between all parties concerned, to organize sitting exams in an appropriate way. Suggested solutions: frequent meetings between trainers and teachers, to establish a certain culture of communication between athletes and teachers, to provide material used in lessons on internet platforms, to use educational videos, to accompany students who are away by teachers, to offer extra tutoring. Overall aim: reduce the amount of classes missed postponing training after lessons.
