The exigency to acquire English in – depth by the teaching staff of Dobele State gymnasium has been determined by several factors. First of all, the English language is one of the main means of communication of the European Union member states and its importance continues to grow. More than a third of adults who live in one of the European Union countries (34%), in addition to their mother tongue is able to communicate in English. Exactly the same processes can be observed in Latvia as well and it determines the need to increase the competitiveness of teachers in these circumstances, as both students and parents who are assessing their English language level as good, consider that teachers have to be good as well. They expect teachers to be able to search the Global net, find and select information, understand how innovations in the world evolve due to rapid globalization and technological progress, and adapt discoveries, knowledge and experiences available. Second, it is a free movement of people not only within the European Union, but globally as well. This makes it necessary to be prepared for new challenges in the field of education. We have bilingual teaching experience, but for a long time the second language has always been Russian. Now the second foreign language very often is English, and teachers must be prepared to develop new curricula if it is necessary. Thirdly, it is important to recognize and adapt to very different teaching and learning methods. The increasing importance is placed on communication skills development, creative thinking etc. Our teachers in order to successfully cope with those new tendencies in education and become equal players in the international scene should know English well. In assessing all these aspects, it was decided to select 8 school teachers: 2 school administration representatives and 6 teachers from different Methodology groups to be enrolled in IPC course „ Better English for teachers” They will be given the opportunity to learn English. In turn, good knowledge of English is a certain guarantee of successful participation in international projects, the opportunity to participate in training projects not only in Latvia, but also in other EU countries and possibility to cooperate with educators and their students via the eTwinning platform. All these points mentioned above, in case of successful implementation of the project, will help to build our school and thus the society more open to innovations.
