The project sets out to improve the quality of mentoring programmes in Europe that are intended to benefit young people and employees typically identified as marginalised and/or 'at risk' of dropping out of educational and training programmes. The primary target group for the project is mentors themselves. The project will build upon mentoring ideas from the previously funded CAMEO project (DG Employment). Project partners will investigate the nature of existing mentoring programmes in their countries for VET and industry. From here they will produce a study of mentors' training needs, and will identify the desirable characteristics of a 'European Mentor' with the long-term aim of developing a standard European 'curriculum vitae' for mentors. Selected mentoring schemes will be piloted with a number of organisations currently delivering mentoring programmes in the partner countries. A subsequent analysis of their effectiveness will then be undertaken. The research and piloting process will be translated into the following deliverables: a handbook on mentors' training needs; a handbook on existing mentoring schemes for different sectors/occupations and an outline series of practical training resources for reference purposes. A common communication platform will be established to encourage dialogue between project partners, primarily by means of a web-conference. This will be complemented by a dedicated project website. Project partners also plan to use TV broadcasting to advertise the mentoring method, in addition to a final transnational conference.
