In the First World War, the frontline ran through West-Flanders (from Nieuwpoort to the French-Belgian border) and Nord-Pas de Calais (from Armentieres southward to Arras), and then further up to the Sommeand Aisne departments. This immense territory was literally cut in two, one side being occupied by the troops of the German Empire, the other by the allies. Even if the official border was still there, it did not make senseanymore. Civilians and soldiers of both countries shared the same fate.Today, many remains of the First World War can still be found in this vast area. To foster and facilitate exchanges between both areas, a network of major sites related to the First World War is developed.
