Master in Handicap Technology

The Master in Handicap Technology project will create vocational training and technical education programmes that combine the necessary 'know-how' to design, plan and categorise technical tools in accordance with the needs of disabled persons. Training will equip individuals to give appropriate technical support to handicapped, disabled, sick and elderly persons in the use of tools that have been developed and adapted specifically for the respective target group. The central aim of the project is to develop technical, psycho-social programmes leading to a Masters degree in Handicap Technology. The project incorporates a series of steps towards the development of the Masters programme and related outputs. Firstly, mapping exercises will be undertaken to establish the current state of research, the equipment available, and the psycho-social and technical interface between the needs of the target group and what is currently being offered with respect to specialist homecare equipment. Secondly, course modules will be developed towards a new curriculum for technicians and vocational workers specialised in the production of tools and support for disabled persons. The principle tool for this will be a web-based, information and communication platform. The project will further develop a working group to promote cooperation between universities and industry towards the development of better technology for disabled persons, and will consider the development of a 'European Certification Centre' to measure the quality of such new tools.
