The MarTEL Plus Project built upon the previously completed and widely successful MarTEL project, which implemented a series of English language tests for Cadets, Officers and Senior Officers in the Merchant Navy, incorporating the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP).The project transfers knowledge, generated during the previous project’s lifecycle, in order to create a number of new outcomes. The first of these was a Maritime English test for Ratings, who were identified recently by the IMO as requiring a standard of English. Secondly, the project improved accessibility for seafarers and test takers by creating a mobile application that allows the target groups to practice the tests from anywhere using a mobile phone; without a mobile phone, the tests can still be accessed via a computer. The third aim and outcome delivered by the project was a set of guidelines for teachers of Maritime English, which bring together all of the MarTEL materials and facilitate the easy use and understanding of these by teachers and trainers. Finally, the project created a comprehensive means of assessing the Speaking skill with an Enhanced Oral Test. Originally intended to be a speaking section for each Phase of MarTEL, this test was developed into a standalone Phase much like Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 and the new Phase R.
