Maritime Education Platform

Within an earlier Leonardo project, MariComp, a study was done after the present and future competencies of Maritime lecturers. One thing that became clear was that lecturers at maritime institutions need to update their knowledge continuously. Furthermore, from relevant media one could conclude that there is room for improvement in maritime educational programs. Ship owners world wide are facing a significant increase in their insurance premiums. An article of the chairman of IMEC stressed the need of investing in maritime training. To move forward with a rapid developing shipping industry, maritime educational institutions should cooperate in sharing their knowledge. Moreover, a Dutch newspaper recently published a plea of the Dutch minister of education for more structure in education by means of the internet and more co-operations between educational institutions. In fact this project fulfils the needs by initiating an improvement action for maritime education, using the internet as well as cooperation. Hence the project fully complies with priority one. The result of the project will be that the knowledge and skills on several (maritime) subjects in European maritime institutions will reach a higher level and will be available on line. The main idea of this project is producing and sharing high quality educational material, in an innovative way. Subsequently maritime institutions, stakeholders and other parties will further build on their maritime network of maritime partners.
