More than 35% of pupils and students regrets within one year the choice they have made. This counts for the choice of a job as well. Pupils often don’t know what they want, generally. They go through an unclear orientation phase and decide at the last moment. Drop-out rates in higher education are, therefore extremely high. Also pupils that take vocational training see themselves often confronted with a choice of profession that does not suit them after all. Also they need to receive better information and guidance regarding their professional possibilities. It is important that youngsters make work of a thorough self-reflection as to what would match their possibilities, interests and abilities. As a school, we should be there to guide and support them during this process. Secondary school need to make more specific and more thorough work developing a necessary and qualitative advisory function towards their student Pupils need to test-drive the sector and profession of their choice during an internship. Pupils need more practical experience It is of utmost importance, not only to study their possibilities in theory, but to practice different work situation in real-life. This will help them to make a more realistic assessment of the different aspects that form part of their possible future professional life. Already acquired competences can be integrated within their the specific context of their internship. Also new competences will be developed. During an internship period, pupils experience the specific company-culture and learn to cope with the practical demands that employers put on employees. As a consequence, the possibility of an internship enhances greatly the pupil’s motivation, their ability to make realistic assessments regarding desired professions, and they learn to engage actively in their own future and develop their ability to assess the practical consequences of specific career-choices. After the internship, all involved parties are gathered for a final assessment talk. Together they will formulate some recommendations, that can be used by the secondary school as part of their job-orientation counseling. The practical feedback is invaluable, not only for the individual pupils, but also for the knowledge acquirement of the school as a job-orientation counselor. Additionaly, involved teachers also benefit from the experience. Through their contacts with the working field; the companies and institutions where their students take an internship, they can spot new trends, technologies and practices. Not only their guidance of the pupils, but also the quality of their teaching will benefit from this. Companies and institutions that would like to attract graduates, will appreciate this effort of adjusting education to the practical needs within the working field. From their contacts with secondary schools, companies and institutions can better understand the practice, possibilities and restrictions within formal education and schools. This understanding will contribute to a better understanding, a better fine-tuning between education and the work-field and it will help companies to present their sector in a more attractive way to the future generation and their potential workforce. On a yearly base 28 students (accountancy, , informatics, secretary, businesseconomics, office, hairdressers) will go on a 2 week internship in Londen. And 16 students (foodprocessing) wil go on an 2 week internship at the Rå Videregående SKole in Norway.
