Making the twitter length news: media literacy in the digital media

The digital revolution challenges traditional forms of journalism. The majority of traditional media is now available online, national newspapers have their own websites, radio is accessed through podcasts and television is available via satellite, streamed on media organisations’ websites or via on-demand. With today’s fast-moving development of ICT, almost everyone has the potential to produce and publish news in the public sphere. Social media channels allow everyone to generate news, while it is difficult to verify the facts at the same time. Although social media help "regular people" to express themselves, they also give additional channels to those who wish to affect us. Many false reports or propaganda are spread by journalists and find their way into regular reporting, mainly because of a lack of training on how to tackle on-line fact-checking. Not only media analysts express concern about media bias, incorrect reports, disinformation or propaganda.
According to these world trends it is crucial to purse journalistic trainings that will increase the competences of young professionals in working with the digital media as well as raise their awareness about the possible challenges that it brings. Professional media makers need up to date competences in order to keep up with those developments. The news have been changing, not only channels (devices), but also their form - like twitter length news - and journalism has to transform accordingly. The DML project seeks to address these issues, as well as the following needs:
- young media makers from rural areas are not competitive enough on the labour market because of having no sufficient skills in the new media production;
- many people still doesn´t have sufficient knowledge to identify disinformation or propaganda on-line.
This project consists of one comprehensive mobility activity. It is 6 days training course on digital/social media, journalistic ethic and media literacy. Its participants will learn how to produce high quality reports for social and digital media, in non-biased and non-stereotyped way. They will acquire and/or improve their critical thinking, skills in quality journalism (e.g. how to find and check proper information, how to report without supporting stereotypes or propaganda in era of digital media)and knowledge (e.g. of journalistic ethic in the digital/social media, the youth policy and advocacy for youth rights through social media, intercultural work and understanding). The participants will also be able to spread the knowledge among wide public and thus raise its media literacy in the digital era.
Objectives of this project are as follows:
- to increase professional capacities of young media makers in working with the digital/social media;
- to promote journalistic ethic in digital/social media;
- to raise public awareness about specifics and challenges of the news communicated by the digital/social media (security, fact-checking, surveillance);
- to increase competences of young media makers in reporting on social, economic and political issues through social media;
- to enhance intercultural learning and intercultural understanding;
- to network.
The DML gathers 52 participants from 13 European organisations of young media makers (journalists, bloggers, social-media activists) producing news on social, economic, or political issues, who are just starting their professional career or who are re-qualifying their competences from traditional media into the social/digital media. The project also aims at participants with fewer opportunities - members of cultural minorities and those living in rural areas.
Activities included in the program consist of non-formal (panel discussions, presentations, seminars, workshops) and informal learning (mainly during field reporting). Participants will substantively and actively contribute to design and preparations of these activities. Since major part of the training is dedicated to practice, participants will directly apply their newly gained skills (learning by doing). The trainers will be journalists, media analysts and specialists on communication from diverse countries.
Main target group of the project are young journalists and other media-makers. In this case, the main expected long-term effect is the achievement of a responsible media (and media-makers) in Europe that report on every theme objectively and properly. The project is also expected to significantly increase the public awareness of specifics and challenges of social / digital media as well as intercultural understanding.
Participants will create media productions for social media and digital devices on themes of their choice. They will also contribute to creation of website, guide on journalistic DOs and DON'Ts within social media, know-how compendium about the digital media production and booklet about media literacy. These outcomes will be published as open educational resources.
