Training is more than just building the skills and knowledge of each individual. Training will be effective only when certain conditions are met. These include a clear commitment from top management and Board, meeting the institution's mission and employees’ training needs, choosing the appropriate methodology, and finally, providing employees an opportunity to apply the skills in their professional practice. Since its foundation in 1996, Ciência Viva has grown institutionally and extended its operation field in the promotion of scientific and technological culture in Portugal, having also created a national network of science centres. In this framework, it’s important to have a trained team able to meet the continuous challenges of their professional career. The main objectives of this project are to develop skills and knowledge in several areas: managing national and international projects, developing and producing interactive exhibitions, conducting initiatives to attract young people to scientific careers, preventing them to dropout school, producing educational resources for schools in different areas of scientific knowledge, exploring different strategies on how to promote Science and Society debates for a more active citizenship, developing foreign languages, exploring learning methodologies in formal and non- formal environments and organizing and managing events. The training program includes 35 professionals, from 5 teams, with the following profile: (a) the educational technician responsible for educational mentoring, producing educational materials and interactive exhibitions, providing scientific support to exhibitions and training for explainers and coordinating national and international projects; (b) the explainer responsible for monitoring visits to the Pavilion of Knowledge, developing educational activities and implementing new ways of engagement with the public, (c) the exhibition technician responsible for producing and implementing exhibitions; (d) the maintenance technician responsible for maintaining the exhibition objects and producing new interactive exhibits; and (e) the technician of events responsible for promoting Ciência Viva initiatives and organizing and managing events. The activities planned include two types of training: attendance at courses/conferences and job -shadowing. In the framework of the first type we include the participation in the 2015 and 2016 editions of "Ecsite Annual Conference" in Italy and Austria, in the "Inspire - International "Science Performance is Ready" event in Slovenia, in the "School and science museum: cooperation for Improving teaching, learning and discover" in Germany, and in the "Facilitating the debate on the scientific and technological progress", "Developing successful exhibitions" and "Developing successful museums and science centres" in Italy. As for the job-shadowing we anticipate the involvement of five European science centres as host institutions for the mobility periods: the "Technopolis" in Belgium, the "Universcience" in France, the "Museo Nazionale della Scienza della and Technology Leonardo da Vinci" in Italy, the "Experimentarium" in Denmark and "Heureka" in Finland. In order to ensure the accomplishment of the project, a dynamic methodology of cooperative work and permanent interaction between the different parties will be implemented involvingtrainees, the Board of Directors of Ciência Viva, coordinators of the projects and host institutions members. Ciência Viva has high expectations regarding this training project as it could represent an asset not only for direct participants but also for others who will benefit, in the medium and long terms, from the experiences, the content and methodologies developed in the framework of training. Ciência Viva expects a better response from employees regarding their work and daily challenges and the development of skills that can contribute to their personal enrichment as well as for team work. With the structured training designed within this project, Ciência Viva aims to increase the quality of work produced by its professionals, ensuring that they meet their institutional objectives and develop new professional motivations. The Ciência Viva National Network of Science Centres – presently with 20 science centres spread across the country - will benefit from the participation in training and dissemination sessions, as well as other entities with regular collaborations with Ciência Viva. Internationally it’s expected that the knowledge, methodologies and resources will enable Ciência Viva to achieve in the future new partnerships, search for new challenges and join new professional projects.
