Maastricht European Studies Chair in EU History

Maastricht University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) applies for this Jean Monnet Chair in order to continue and to systematically deepen its focus on European Studies and to mainstream EU-related teaching in its other programmes. Prof. Kiran Klaus Patel, the prospective chairholder, has considerable experience in teaching and an extensive track record in research on a wide range of issues in the area of EU politics and history. His work will systematically deepen the interdisciplinary focus of European Studies at Maastricht University. Concrete activities: 1. play a key role in the preparation of a newly planned BA Programme at FASoS (working title: BA on regional and global studies), and thus to mainstream European Studies in a new and innovative teaching programme;2. develop and implement a new 8-week course on “Historicizing European Union” for the Research Master European Studies;3. improve and update existing European Studies models (BA and MA level) at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences; particularly in the BA European Studies’ module “Policy Domains”;4. foster synergies to teaching programs beyond European Studies, especially by offering honours seminars on EU-related topics (open to Arts and Culture students as well as European Studies students);5. organise a guest lecture series with speakers from academia as well as from the policy-community (Maastricht Monnet Lectures) open to students and colleagues from FASoS, the whole UM community, and the general public;6. host an interdisciplinary conference on Europe in a Globalizing World since the 1970s, including a workshop on teaching EU history. The overall goal is to further substantiate the historical pillar in UM’s research on the EU;7. publish a special issue/edited volume building on the results of no. 6 with a first-class publisher.
