The NGO Centar “Fenix“ was founded in 1997 in Sanski Most as an organisation focused on mother/children’s health issues. It later developed a broad range of social services for the elderly, ill and indigent person. The main focus stays on people with special needs. Fenix advocates for an improvement in health protection for women, children and the family along with an enhancement in the social conditions of underprivileged categories including the elderly, ill and indigent. We are a meeting center for old and young, study center about giving birth, life with a focus on self-awareness of own needs, values, strength. Center for teaching and researching about life and destinies and a center for help and support in crucial moments in women’s lives and their families. Center for help women and men, who find their self on the edge on their existence with a focus on mutual help. The current staff of the Center “Fenix” consists of 30 people working in two houses: “Fenix” with daily activities long-term project in daily basis; and “Zlatna jesen” – 24 hours home and care for elderly people. Our employees are people with different backgrounds (refugees, displaced person, single mothers, etc.) and have different degrees, mostly are medical staff – midwives, nurses, etc., predominantly women. We can prove experiences with volunteers for years since we have them in our organisation every year. Up to four volunteers aged from 17 to 30 years work in our Centar „Fenix“. The target group that we generally work with are pregnant women and their families, young mothers, breastfeeding mothers newborn and small children, around (100 per year); Elderly people, homeless people and people with health disabilities, with social disabilities (over 300 per year). Aditionally we work with children, especially from the age of 2-7 (20-25 children in a group). We offer services for all generations, regardless of their national, racial, or political identity or gender. The activities of Fenix focus on helping people with their needs and we stand for the human dignity of each individual in their various living environment. Fenix is open to people from all ethnic groups and offers a large spectrum of possibilities for meeting people and inter-generational activities for all ages. During the work in these project, volunteers should learn how to organise, be patient, and gain self confidence, self initiative, intercultural understanding. The volunteer will get the possibility to improve for example social, intercultural, linguistic and subject-specific skills. This will help the volunteer to gain a wider point of view in life. To integrate volunteers in the work of Centar fenix shows a use for all projectpartners and the community in Sanski Most. The local communit profits from the help of the volunteers not only with directly given help but also with their ideas, their different points of view and their intercultural perspectives. This results and experiences will also be useful for the members of the community after the return of the volunteers. Thats why we take care for selection of volunteers, which has mainly to be open minded and motivated for this kind of project.
