"Life in Periphery" was an international youth exchange worked and also carried out by 25 youngsters mainly between age 18-25 from five different countries - Estonia (host), Latvia, Poland, Czech Republic and the Netherlands. The aim of the project is promote european youngsters ́ intercultural communication and cooperation, entreprenuerial attitude and active citizenship. The reason for making this project was to get a better idea of the youngsters situation in different countries ́ rural areas; a fresh look (from partners with different backgrounds) on each others communities, its benefits and opportunities for future; a basic know-how and empowerement to be an active community member, ideas and good examples of sustainable life at country-side.
All five partner organisations origin from small rural communities, are concidered peripheries in own countries and/ or are situated far away from their country`s capital. Although the size of the communities (of the partner organisations) are relatively different compared to each other, all still face some common problems as periphery areas in their own countries´ context. What also connects all five partners is their common concern about the sustainability of rural areas, and their activities are aimed to reduce that concern. All together we are worried about our communities ́ perspectives and sustainability. More precisely about the issue of how to motivate young people to stay or return to their home place.
The plan was to do it by getting an insight into the attitude of fellow local youngsters towards their future connection with rural community (local surveys conducted by participants) and comparing these results with attitudes from partner-countries; pulling attention towards the merits and value of living in rural community (through various field trips, presentations, marketing and start-up workshops and success stories); assembling ideas and good examples on how to promote (youth) enterpreneurship and make rural areas more sustainable.
In the process a web content was created to assemble all of our project results (survey results, interviews, conclusions etc) into a public blog. Simply to share the experience, for other people to discover and get inspiration from. We also generated ideas on how to continue working on these topics after this project was finished and made plans for future cooperation.
