Let's Turn Discrimination into Tolerance!
Date du début: 17 juil. 2014, Date de fin: 17 oct. 2014 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Discrimination towards minorities has always been one of the key issues in Europe. People of different races, cultures, sexual orientations and religious believes are often discriminated, which results in their exclusion from the society, problems in the labour market as well as negatively affected social life. To tackle this, youth exchange “Let’s Turn Discrimination into Tolerance!” will be hosted in Lithuania (18th – 26th of July). The project is being implemented by organizations from countries where the problems of minority discrimination and exclusion are especially visible (Lithuania, Spain, Romania, Turkey, Croatia, Italy). A total of 36 participants (18-30 years old / 6 from each country / gender balance) will be involved. Priority will be given to those who have suffered or are suffering from intolerance towards minorities, as well as the ones with fewer opportunities. The main objectives of the project is to share existing experiences of minority exclusion, discuss the ways on how to facilitate their social integration, defend human rights, values of tolerance, equal opportunities and work towards the elimination of discrimination in the long term. At the same time, the intention of the project is to increase the public awareness of the minority problems and positively affect the target groups throughout the participating countries. The project also aims to help the participating youth grow professionally, raise their social awareness, keep them active, involve them in multi-cultural discussions, develop the spirit of volunteerism, enhance their communication skills, self-esteem and tolerance to others. In order to achieve these objectives, a range of non-formal learning methods developed by all the partner organisations will be employed. The main activities will identify minority discrimination in a number of different settings, find the ways to tackle the problem and create the means of spreading information about the existing issues to the wider public. Involvement, creativity and initiative of all the participants will be encouraged throughout the activities, which will include: 1) interactive workshops, 2) country presentations on minority discrimination, 3) discussions with the representatives of minority groups, 4) mini sport competitions, 5) application of art as a mean of non-formal education, 6) analysing relevant video material, 7) quizzes, 8) excursions, 9) group exercises, games, 10) celebrations of “Nelson Mandela Day”, “One Voice Day”, and much more. In order to facilitate integration of the participants: 11) cultural evenings, 12) energizers, 13) ice-breaking and socialising activities will also be organised. Since the project goal is to reach the public and to disseminate the results effectively: 14) special videos, 15) public hand-outs and 16) an e-booklet will be prepared by all the participants. All of this will ensure that the project would induce a positive effect on the participants, organisations and the target groups in regional, national and international levels. It is expected that the participants will not only improve a number of skills and competences, but will also feel more socially accepted, learn how to express their opinion and stand up for themselves. This would benefit their wellbeing, enhance their lifestyle as well as increase their chances to perform well in their future jobs and/or education. The participating organisations would increase their knowledge on tackling minority discrimination and learn new non-formal education methods, all of which could then be used in their own future initiatives. At the same time, the project would help them grow internationally, increase public awareness of their actions and enhance their capacities of reaching the objectives of youth development. Target groups – minorities suffering discrimination - and the general public is expected to be impacted as well. Firstly, the participants will share the experience and knowledge acquired throughout the project within their respective communities. Likewise the partner organizations will employ social media and similar projects in the future to spread the ideas of minorities’ inclusion. The results dissemination will be also facilitated through involvement of mass-media, and spreading of videos and e-booklets prepared during the project. Consequently, the target groups are expected to feel more supported and active in the societies they live in. The project is anticipated to not only help the participating youth to enhance their skills and knowledge, but to also increase general awareness of the existing problems of discrimination towards various minorities in all of the participating countries; thus, creating long-term benefits. It is expected that a positive change will be induced through the e-booklet and video prepared during the activities. All in all, we aspire to make the project’s results as tangible as possible.
