Lessons of European Unity. For us and for Future Generations

Context/background of project - When working with the youth, we notice that patriotism, citizenship, openness to the world are not among their most important values. We understand that the maturity of democratic and civil society, unity are among the most topical Europe’s tasks today. Therefore, we seek to develop civic youth, raise awareness, increase their interest for the last decades of their country’s history, to educate and inform about the country's military and its role in ensuring their country and all European security. Objectives: to assess the impact of the Cold War to the current geopolitical situation and future generations, bringing young people from different countries into paramilitary-‘survival’ camp and emphasizing the importance of the unity of the peoples of Europe today and in the future. Participants – the youngsters from Lithuania, Estonia, Czech Republic, Italy and Hungary. The participants will be 16-25 years old youngsters with fewer opportunities. We invite 10 participants+2 leaders from each country. Overall – 50 participants and 10 leaders. Description of activities – paramilitary-‘survival’ camp, daily walks/hikes on the partisan roads, visiting the Cold War museum (bunkers) in Plateliai, discussions, debates about the European history, interactive history lessons, artistic/documentary history movies, creative workshops, cultural nights, orientation/strategic outside games, ‘field investigation’ – imitation game, theoretical and practical introduction to war weapons. Methodology: ‘survival’ camp, hikes, team building tasks, lesson-discussion, role-plays, team and individual tasks, reflections, creative workshops. Expected results for the participants: the youth will gain courage, physical endurance, regime and discipline; learn about their country’s army history, current issues, Lithuanian Riflemen's Union and postwar partisan activity; improve their knowledge about the countries’ defense and security issues; discover the values of patriotism, citizenship, responsibility, respect; learn the lessons of survival, how to navigate in the environment and to protect the nature. Impact: the project seeks to develop civic youth, raise awareness, increase their interest for the last decades of their country’s history, to educate and inform about the country's military and its role in ensuring their country and all European security. We have to learn history lessons that should not be repeated.
