Leonard Cheshire Disability - Fethneys
Date du début: 1 févr. 2015, Date de fin: 30 avr. 2016 PROJET  TERMINÉ

Leonard Cheshire Disability is the UK’s leading charity supporting people with disability. Every year, we support thousands of people in the UK and around the world with physical and learning disabilities to fulfill their potential and live the lives they choose. We work for a society in which every person is equally valued. We believe that people with disabilities should have the freedom to live their lives the way they choose - with the opportunity and support to live independently, to contribute economically and to participate fully in society. In order to achieve this, we rely on well-trained, committed volunteers to provide high quality support to the people we work with. Fethneys is a Leonard Cheshire Disability transition home providing support to 10 young adults with physical disabilities to live independently. The aim of the project was to empower and enable residents to access social, leisure and employment activities, and thereby play a crucial part in preparing the young residents for independent living. The project provided that extra quality support, youth to youth, that built residents confidence in performing every tasks and taking part in leisure activities as well as generate understanding and tolerance between youth across culture and abilities. We believe that this not only enhances the quality of life for our residents but also contributes to a smoother transition to independent living. Simultaneously, it allowed the volunteers to build strong relationships with our young residents, and get an insight into how it is to be a young person with disability in the UK and the challenges it generates. The objectives of the project were: 1. To provide quality support to residents in every day activities 2. To plan, coordinate and facilitate life skills activities 3. To plan, coordinate and facilitate the making of a sensory garden alongside the residents 4. To ensure that residents can access local community services and leisure activities 5. To facilitate tolerance among youth across culture and ability All project activities were conducted to achieve the above mentioned objectives. The volunteers provided quality support and attention to our residents in every day life, and encouraging them to access facilities in their local area and pursue their interests and try new activities. The expected outcome for the residents is that they will actively participate in a range of activities inside and outside of the home, and thereby develop new skills and interests, which in turn will make them more self-confident and independent. The expected outcome for the volunteers is that they will develop solidarity with people with disability, and become an ambassador for disability issues. They have seen the implication of being disabled and the inequalities it creates in our current society. Through the placement we encouraged the volunteers to become active citizens by overcoming prejudice and learn to recognize it in others, which is the first step to changing society to become more inclusive and tolerant.
