The Vocational College II in Coburg is about to develop in close cooperation with our partner organization ADC College London/Harrow a macro-didactic framework comprising of two training units abroad. These training units are supplemented by a so called blended-mentoring approach, i.e. a mix of personal assistance during the mobility stay as well as online communication via weblog at times when teacher staff is not personally available. The training units are a one week course inhouse-training honing speaking skills in standard business situations at ADC and a two weeks job placement at London-based companies in the field of business & administration (service industry), which will be arranged by ADC according to previous assessment of the participants. Standard business situations will touch on specific matters such as customer advisory service, welcoming visitors or presenting one’s company fluently.
Furthermore, the students will be trained to reduce their inhibitions to talk in a foreign language. They will be placed into a position where they have to reflect their way of talking and the effect of non-verbal communication on their counterparts. During the internship, the students will be requested to work along in close contact with their new colleagues, especially to comprehend the successive steps of administrative tasks (job shadowing) and to deliberately accomplish basic routine work by themselves. Explorative questionnaires and interview guidelines previously set up by our team and the students will help them describe and visualize business processes in their host organization.
Audio-visual material will eventually be selected, assessed, pooled and cut in order to generate teachers’ resources for future generations of business students (trainees at voc. college). Our aim is establish a pool of audio-visual material that can easily be retrieved from our school-based intranet and fruitfully implemented during language and business admin lessons. We feel confident that there will be a surplus in these efforts because there is a shortage of job-specific training video clips our students can genuinely identify with.
The Vocational College II Coburg is the formal applicant for this Erasmus+ project that addresses students who are in the first period of their professional training. We assume the overall responsibility for project planning and coordination, legal and contractual management and evaluation of the project. Our partners and relevant stakeholders are well-established local companies where our students are training to become industrial assistants, wholesale assistants and assistants in the field of transport and logistics (HABA, Kaeser, Leise, Schenker etc.). These companies provide us with information about training needs to be addressed during the job placement. They are for the most part medium-sized companies in the Coburg region that have business relationships within Europe or worldwide. ADC College is our partner in London. It is a profit-oriented institute that organizes customized training courses promoting business-related communication skills and assigns foreign students to places of work at selected companies.
After terminating the project, we expect the following results to materialize: creating a pool of audio-visual material as teachers’ resources, reflection on informal competences and documentation of informal competences in standard business situations, e. g. language proficiency in Business English, communication skills (welcoming customers, answering phone calls, sorting out complaints etc.), sociableness and self-confident behavior when moving in business circles. The expected effects on informal learning on the part of the students will be assessed by answering an explorative questionnaire and participating in a group discussion at the end of the mobility stay. Skills and competencies aquired during the placement will furthermore be assessed and validated according to a modified ECVET-grid reflecting basic job requirements in business administration. The results will be committed to paper with the help of portfolios describing a range of graded competencies.
The focus of our project is London. The host companies our students are assigned to are spread all over Greater London. Within two years’ time of project duration, two flows will be arranged for our students at our vocational college.
