LEARNING IN A NEW EUROPE - New Challenges, New Inspiration, New Teaching Methods The overall aim of Learning in a New Europe is to develop and qualify the teaching of European integration and EU politics in secondary education in Denmark. A new European Parliament, a new Commission, a post-crisis situation with an alarming level of poverty and a new EU/Russia relation after the events in Ukraine. This calls for new teaching materials and new didactical approaches.The project builds on five years’ experience with EU-education activities in the DEOeducation initiative.One of the main challenges to EU education in Denmark is the absence of a cross-disciplinary, mainstreamed approach to EU-teaching. The concrete aim of this project is to provide a comprehensive approach, to meeting the cross-discipline challenge, which relies on:1) Teaching methods and materials that make cross-disciplinary teaching possible and feasible in the classroom2) Materials and activities that allow teachers to become up to date with recent European developments3) Inspiration and didactical tools to engage students in these subjects.The Learning in a New Europe consists of five key activities: • Four large-scale teacher training conferences• Two workshops for Diploma of Education candidates in Social Science• Establishment of an Advisory Board of active teachers, with hands-on expertise from the class room• Establishment of an EU Teachers’ Award, which will be given to a teacher who has made an extraordinary effort to make teaching on the European Union engaging and inspiring.• Development of six complete and free online crash-course materialsThe project will be executed in cooperation with the University of Aarhus, the University of Roskilde, The Danish Ministry of Education, relevant teachers associations and DEO’s well-established EU-network for teachers: A network including more than 230 teachers from 139 schools and educational institutions.
