Leadership in youth work for inclusion, intercultural dialogue and acceptance

During our youth work and cooperation as partners, we have noticed lack of qualified and willing youth leaders for better inclusion and intercultural acceptance in our multiethnic communities. Project targets youth workers willing to take the lead of promoting and leading quality inclusion and intercultural dialogue in our projects and communities and willing to improve intercultural learning/dialogue in their activities for more inclusive society around us. All partners were be involved in preparation, implementation and evaluation and follow-up phase and activities during the training course, while the preparation team of trainers, facilitators and staff have been comprised of experienced youth trainers from applicant from Germany (OH), hosting organisation from Serbia (CJCD) and from partner from Croatia (Realization). The core activity of the project was 8 days long training course. It was organised in the youth hostel in Novi Sad, from 15th till 23rd September 2015. Project gathered 34 participants, trainers and staff from 19 organisations and 16 countries (Germany, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo* UN resolution, Montenegro, Albania, Bulgaria, FYR Macedonia, France, Italy, Greece, Romania, Turkey, Poland and Slovenia). Themes of the project were: Volunteer projects, Intercultural dialogue, Acceptance of diversity, Intercultural learning, challenges and solutions in implementations of interethnic / interreligious / intercultural activities, leadership, teamwork, conflict transformation, communication, Youth in Action programme and new project ideas. Objectives were: • Sharing experience - realities and activities - regarding intercultural diversity and exclusion/inclusion in our communities • Explore the concepts of intercultural learning, dialogue and acceptance and of inclusion/exclusion terminology • Promoting intercultural dialogue as instrument in acquiring the knowledge and aptitudes for dealing with a more open and more complex environment • Discussing and understanding characteristics and challenges of the quality youth work activities for inclusion and intercultural dialogue/acceptance • Enabling participants to develop and lead quality youth work projects which promote inclusion and contribute to intercultural acceptance of diversity in communities and further develop their competences in communication, conflict transformation and teamwork for quality leadership and facilitation of inclusion and intercultural dialogue on those projects • Introducing the Erasmus+ Youth in Action programme and developing new projects and future European level cooperation among participating organizations with the topic of inclusion and intercultural dialogue and acceptance The training course was based on the approach and principles of non-formal education and our experience and expertise in leadership, volunteering and intercultural dialogue, and had used insights from the SALTO booklets, EU policy documents and T-kits of the Partnership programme of EU and CoE. The training course wass designed as an open learning process based on participants’ experience and exchange. A combination of different creative, participatory and interactive methods were used and designed upon the profile of participants. Project was envisioned to have the biggest impact on direct beneficiaries-participants who got to know the situations in other participants' communities, share ideas on inclusion and cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and promoting acceptance of diversity and will further develop creative and analytical thinking of ways of active citizenship for development of inclusive and intercultural society through development of quality European projects dealing with cultural diversity and targeting youth with fewer opportunities. Also, there will be important impact on participating / partner organisations who have received trained people to improve own work with inclusion and cultural diversity, intercultural cooperation and dealing with quality challenges in inclusive and intercultural youth work and will be more capable and better equipped for developing of new local and European projects and partnerships. As a potential longer term benefit, we expect the increase in number of youngsters and youth workers that will participate in youth work activities that our direct beneficiaries will organise and lead. Multiplying is also expected with the increased number of youth workers as leaders for quality inclusion and intercultural learning and dialogue, as our participants will be organising workshops for sharing the knowledge they gained.
