Saint Teresa's school is involved with many foreign language and cultural activities but there isn't any formal, established language teaching that runs throughout the school and complies with the new statutory requirements of the new modern languages curriculum. In light of this, we have decided that because of the current expertise of staff, we would apply for an Erasmus+ grant to develop French as our 'core' foreign language; 4 staff members will take part in immersion training in France.
Our objectives are to develop staff confidence and competence in delivering language lessons; to develop intercultural awareness, in particular French culture, in our pupils, staff, governors and parents; to develop a love for language learning, specifically French, in our children and to ensure that they have enhanced opportunities in life because they can speak another language(s).
We have 145 pupils who will be involved in this project at some level and their parents who will be invited to take part in several activities, 24 members of staff who will also all be involved in this project at varying levels, 14 governors invited to join us for key activities, local schools in our network and members of our wider community will be involved where appropriate.
We aim to establish activity days and a French week that will involve all our stakeholders; these will promote French culture and language. We will establish a French Club for extra curricular activities which will be open for Key Stage two children with a particular interest in learning French. We will begin to teach French to a Year group, with a view to incorporating other year groups as our confidence grows in delivering a foreign language. We will also link with a French school and hope to develop a real and meaningful relationship with them, working on real life projects that will share cultural similarities and differences.
These activities will be carried out by participants and the project management team together with the input and support of other members of staff. It will be monitored for its impact by the project team and governors. We are expecting to see a rise in the cultural understanding levels of the children taking part in these activities and the acquirement of high frequency words by those learning the language. The intercultural awareness of our extended community should also be improved.
When we are successful the school will be poised to reap the longer term benefits of shared good practice, confident teachers of a foreign language, children who love learning and an effective language curriculum that is being embedded into the life of the school, as well as the capacity to maintain it.
