In 2002 European Heads of State or Government called for at least two foreign languages to be taught from an early age - 'Mother Language Plus Two'. Member States were invited to establish national plans to give structure, coherence and direction to promote multilingualism. In 2012 Ireland was found to have one of the lowest percentages in Europe of citizens who were able to hold a conversation in at least one foreign language. In 2014 language teachers in Banagher College recognised that despite dedicated motivated teachers and pupils, students were leaving the school system with high grades in language but little or no competence in actual and real communication in their chosen foreign language. This needs to be addressed. The project aims to provide greater understanding and responsiveness to social, linguistic and cultural diversity. It addresses the issue of lack of awareness of a European dimension and internationalisation within the Banagher College school community. The objective is that the entire school population, and a broader population of schools locally and nationally, change their attitude and acquire information, knowledge and competence in these areas. A group of 10 carefully chosen staff comprising teachers and management will participate in the mobility projects. All participants will be highly motivated, capable, enterprising, and adept at disseminating material acquired. The participants will gain training in the areas of language teaching using ICT, language learning and teaching through performing arts and European based methodologies. Participants will also see language teaching and learning in practice in other European countries. The project aims at furnishing teachers with the necessary tools and knowledge to achieve all objectives. It will increase motivation and satisfaction for both teachers and pupils. All new knowledge will benefit the Banagher college pupils and staff. It will also be shared with a much broader audience of pupils, management and teachers nationwide. Participation in language courses dedicated to language improvement will provide participants with relevant and necessary exposure to the living language. This project will equip Banagher College pupils on their journey to Europe. They will obtain a Europass Language Passport and the competence to communicate with their European neighbours n their own tongue, and not simply the lingua franca.
