The application is for 1 primary school teacher from Cornbank St James Primary School to take part in a one week immersion course to increase language capacity in line with the Scottish Government’s 1+2 Languages approach. The participant is the current Primary 4 teacher who has gained experience in teaching stages at Primary 1, 2, 4, 6 and 7 so is confident in disseminating knowledge across the school and is aware of the needs at different stages. He has previously lived abroad in Germany for one academic year.The aim of the project is to increase confidence and capacity in French teaching and to embed French language at all stages from Primary 1-7. We have already taken the first steps in this and are currently supported by a French Language Assistant for one morning per week. The training will enable the school to take forward French by upskilling the participant and then allowing him to share practice, methodologies and knowledge across the school.The course, run by LFEE, involves learning French with native speakers, developing greater cultural awareness of life in France and increasing awareness of language teaching methodologies. It also has an element of ICT and resources and activities will be available to enable teachers to motivate learners through this medium. Training on the course will be delivered through tutorials and practical activities. Following the course, the participant will lead in school drop in sessions for staff, share resources, model language teaching and lead assemblies on aspects of French language and culture. He will also involve parents by delivering activities at Parent Partnership meetings and during school Open Days.As a result of this course, pupils will increase their language and grammar knowledge as well as their awareness of French culture. It will also increase knowledge of French from a younger age and we will build on our use of ICT to motivate learners and to improve knowledge of French. There will be a more international dimension available to pupils. Staff will be more confident in teaching the language due to the support activities, which will be available within school.The long term benefits will be to make language learning sustainable within the school by increasing the capacity of teachers. It is, more importantly, to raise attainment in modern foreign languages at all levels and to encourage pupils to select languages following the end of the Broad General Education at the age of 14. This will in turn enable access to a wider variety of roles in the workplace and broaden the horizons of the children in our care.
